Was considering putting one in my car. At first I was going to put an Xbox in it, but after reading all the horror stories about the HDD's dying from the car vibrations, I realized why I've pretty much only ever seen PS2s in cars--no HDDs in them to bust. Anyway, here's what I figured:

1. Need an inverter, around 140 watts, maybe less.

2. Store PS2 under seat and out of sight.

3. Run rca cables from PS2 up through back of seat into headrest mounted monitor.

4. Run audio rca input from PS2 through an extension under the carpet into the back of my Pioneer deck. I think I may need to buy a special adapter from Pioneer to get RCA inputs, b/c the deck has RCA preouts in the back instead.

Any thoughts? I'm doing this because I tend to have several hours between classes, don't live anywhere near my school, and I'm usually stuck there. End up going for lunch with my friends and basically wasting time if we don't have any reading left to do, etc. It would be cool to turn the car on and play PS2 in the back of the car. :D

Go for it. I have a full carpc based off a M10000N and I love it. Been planning on putting MAME on it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yes, you will need an adapter for the headunit. Any decent car audio shop (not Best Buy or Circuit City) should have it, it's $35-40 if I remember correctly. Using an inverter you might have noise issues but it's unavoidable since you want a PS2 in there.

My friend has one... he got it installed by a professional audio/video shop... do you want me to ask how much the installation was? (He already had the screens and everything else.)

Yea I'd like to know this also. My friends and I are getting ready to go on a roadtrip from South Florida to Michigan (summer house), stopping numers times along the way. It's a 24 hour ride though, so I wanted to hook up my PS2 to a small LCD TV i'm going to pick up shortly. I don't even know how to install the T.V. A friend of mine somehow did something where he spliced some cables and was able to plug it in to the cigarette lighter outlet. Don't know how that works though, and I think it's just a makeshift method.

I did a quick search on Pioneer.com, and the adapter (Pioneer CDRB10) is around $35 for my DEH-P4600MP deck. I figure that, plus whatever for a PS2 used and some used games from gamestop and a 7" LCD monitor, and I should be good to go. I may just redo the carpeting while I'm at it, and I'm still thinking about whether to reupholster with leather or vinyl (leatherette or something).

I don't understand why people do this stuff... you can't play it when you're driving, so it's just for the benefit of your passengers. Screw them. I never have passengers in my back seat anyway.

Bah, I read all but the last paragraph! I got bored with the specifics of how he was going to do it. Still seems kind of dumb to me, you'd have to have to leave your car running or run the risk of draining the battery.

And I was making a general statement, I'm sure most of the other people who do that stuff to their car do it because they have hours to kill between classes. :)

I have power and signal cables set up in my car so that I can switch out sources as I wish (Xbox, GC, PS2, whatever with composite outputs). The signal cables you have right--you need a pair of RCA cables from your head unit (or amplifiers, either one), and a video cable from your screen to your potential source. For the power you need an AC/DC inverter. You can get these pretty much at any hardware or electronics store, should run you about $50 or so. There are a couple of inverter types--the cigarette lighter type, which is easier but you'll end up with ugly wires in your car, or a 12V lead type, which you could tap into the power of the car directly. Easiest way to do this is to splice your power wire for your amps and install a distribution block, and patch one lead to your inverter.

I don't know if you did your own install, but in my car, I ran my power wiring under the passenger door sill, and my signal cables down the driver's side (to prevent feedback). I had the two sets meet in the middle under the back seat, and I have my power and signal wires all inside my rear center fold-down armrest thing. Sorry my descriptions aren't very good, it's easier with pics. PM me if you have any questions.
