Anybody here ever had a torn miniscus and arthroscopic surgery - going in tomorrow...

I didn't have general for my shoulder so I was awake. I had it only like a week ago. Scarring is minimal, two small X's. Pain is much less then I expected and is more from what they did to my shoulder then the cutting and stuff to get in. I don't know how serious that is, if they are just trimming the disc you should be fine inside a week, I'm serious, you heal that fast.

I had it done a few years ago. Just 4 small X's around my knee. Not a lot of pain afterwards (I just used one vikadin out of the whole prescription). I did have to go to phys therapy for a few weeks though.

I'm happy it was done. I can bend my knee full now and it doesn't hurt when I rotate on it.

my roommate should get it done... he tore his during the last football game of the season and has been "tuffing" it out since... he really doesn't want to have surgery

I had one done in my knee that I screwed up in soccer, it wasn't very fun, mainly because I have Malignant Hyperthermia, so therefore I'm allergic to many common anestetics. Instead, they had to drive a needle into my spine to temporarily paralize me... it wasn't much fun at all, although it was interesting to be able to watch it.

The worst part is IF you get sick from the anethetic or pain killers. Other than that, ehh.
Sleeping comfortably is a hassle for a while. Not showering for a while is a hassle.
For a short time, folx will wait on you--enjoy it while it lasts, cuz it won't last long, heh.
Stock up on stuff you love to eat--enjoy.

Thanks guys. Had surgery on my throat a few months back (28 and falling apart) and it went smoothly - so I'm not worried about the Anestesia. Last time the guy had me count back from 20 and I think I made it to 16 (he said the big guys like to try to fight it). Well damnit I'm determined to make it to 12 this time!

Good friggin luck!

I've had surgery twice on my right shoulder which included the repair of a full tear and removable of bone spurs and just had spurs removed and an orthogram on Monday on my left. Been off work since June and am sick and tired of pain killers! MRI...opensided thank the lord. Orthogram.....therapy and therapy and therapy...and...

I know more about shoulders than most doctors and nurses and THAT is more than I EVER wanted to know!

I'll say it again...Good friggin luck!

Get a Saline Block. That will kill the pain for 24 hours after surgery without any pills. It is the recovery that sucks!

Yeah, that's encouraging. Here's the low-down get a local (epidural). It's nearly impossible to die from an epidural and paralysis only happens if an idiot is your anesthesiologist in which case he definitely would have killed you under general anesthesia (1/200,000 healthy young people). I've loved both of my epidurals (primarily b/c the rest of the cocktail makes you feel good) and hated general (dry, sore throat). Your recovery will depend on the degree of injury and your pre-morbid function. If you really fudged it up it may take 8 weeks or more to return to normal function without pain after they clean everything up. If you've got a nick it may be just a few days. PT is crucial and work on your incisions afterwards to minimize the scar tissue.

My grandfather had it done recently on his right shoulder, he was doing well shortly after the surgery. He has to have both of his shoulders "replaced", he said there was nothing too it. Good luck

-Peace

You get the sore throat because they cram (ease) a tube to do the breathing while you are out. I went in for miniscus and it ended up being an ACL and cartilage problem.

Did I mention my five shoulder operations?

Oh yeah if you're visually-challenged you can't wear glasses or contacts so even if you are conscious you might not be able to see the monitor for the arthroscope. Oh and ask your doctor about the section on the consent for that says . . . "medicine is not an exact science" . . .

<< I went in for miniscus and it ended up being an ACL and cartilage problem..... >>

Uh-oh. My MRI was inconclusive, and my pain has been sporadic. He *thinks* it's a torn miniscus (which is why I've been saying it), but he isn't 100% certain. Sure hope it isn't that ACL stuff. Boo-hoo.🙁

Already had Lasik, so not worried about the vision thing! But again, it's a general. On the bright side the doc said the anestesiologist that I'm using is the one that's done him and his whole family. Yee -haw! Counting - "20, 19, 18, 17, 16", and then out cold

Technically you do not receive an epidural as a "spinal" anesthetic. Its intrathecal or subarachnoid block, not epidural. Epidural is what you get when you're in labor. But that's all academic because the effect/principle is pretty much the same.
