I got a case from eBay for camping and stuff, but I think they're great for when I'm too lazy to make something at home. I got the authentic ones made by Ameriqual, not the MRE knockoffs that are also sold on eBay.

Jalapeño Cheddar spread is awesome.

For some reason I love love love the regular crackers. Anyone have a recipe just for these?

I like the candy. So far I've scored M&Ms, Tootsie Rolls, and Red Hots (which I hate).

I'm currently on a losing streak of NOT having any Tabasco sauce in my last 3 MREs.

The single item with the highest amount of calories I've eaten so far is... a strawberry milkshake mix. I think it was 300-400 calories just by itself.

What do you guys like?

I'd rather get off my lazy ass and cook something decent than eat that crap.

I was thinking of those for college because I have no place to cook real food and don't want to eat the cafeteria food everyday...but than I figured that these can't really taste much better so I quickly forgot the idea.

Do they really taste ok?

The snacks and gum that they come with are pretty good, but the main entrees themselves are usually pretty awful. Some of them taste like the foil lined packs that they come in!

The crackers are always stale, too :(

First few are ok. When you get into the hundreds they are definitely not that good anymore.

MREs aren't so bad. Homeland security used to give them to the security firm I used to work for in case of "emergency". We used to eat them on the overnight shift when we didn't want to leave our compound to go get some chow.

I worked down in New Orleans right after katrina getting the cell service back up for cingular/at&t and picked up about 8 cases while I was there.... I love them. My family is also from the MS coast and New Orleans area they have a ton stock piled as well. Great for camping and for other times when your broke. The national guard handed them out like they where going out of style when I was down there. They loaded my truck for me even heh. We had very limited suplies for a few days until our goodies from corp. landed so they sure helped out.

I used to get free MREs from the ROTC guys since they always had extra rations from their training missions. It certainly adds variety when the only other "snack" food you have is ramen. I could see how eating them for weeks on end would cause problems, but they served as a good occasional replacement for ramen.

Depends. I'm Chinese and grew up eating a lot of different things, so I can pretty much eat anything and for the most part like it. I also like the novelty and the convenience of MREs. I've found that a lot of Caucasians have a LOT narrower range of foods that they will eat and like. So I guess I'm in the minority when it comes to eating and liking MREs.

Compared to the backpacking food that I cook in my camping stove, I feel that MREs are more substantial and "stick to the ribs," so to speak.

As for the cost, yes, they are expensive at $5-6 a pop. But consider that they're over 1000 calories each so if you eat two a day that's $10 a day for food. Still more expensive than cooking your own food, and probably a lot more expensive if you don't even use the meal plan that you already paid for...

MRE's are actually designed to stick in your system for a while so that you know you won't have to drop a deuce as often :D

but when it's time, oh boy if you haven't been drinking enough water bring something to bite down on while you're in the latrine!

Aye, that's what I've heard. Luckily for me I DO drink quite a bit of water, and the MREs include toilet paper as well!

My dad had a buddy in the Army back in the 70's. He gave us some C rations once. It was some awful crap. But I thought it was badass anyway because it was Army food.

I'll take an MRE over starving or mexican food any day.

Seems pretty similiar to the snack packs you get on airplanes. You can probably buy the same stuff at Walmart and assemble your own for less. I can see the appeal for camping but not really around the house.

Also, snack food like cheese and crackers and cookies are really just empty calories. Not a problem when you're doing a lot of exercise (ie., hiking) but it's a good way to gain weight at home.

Agreed! When will Mexicans learn to stop making food in this country? They're taking away jobs from decent, hard working American chefs. I say, boycott Mexican food and when you go to one of their "restaurants" with your friends, bring an MRE instead.

Got a good friend who's a tank platoon commander in the Marines. He says that Meals Ready to Eat equals three lies.

Yes, they are about 2,000 calories each.

Our nickname for them was Mr. E, or mystery. :p
