Then I made the mistake of insisting she use it for a few days :p I haven't seen my dear iPod ever since - she won't let me anywhere near it :( If you guys can afford it, by all means go for it! This is the best $227 I've ever spent (took a lot of amazon.com coupons, gc's and old comp. part sales to get to that price ;) ) The sound quality would probably not satisfy audiophiles but it is good enough for me. I find my car to be the best place to use the iPod (with a cassette adapter). With a 10GB iPod you have 2100+ songs literally in your pocket....no way you can beat that! BTW, I use Xplay. ephpod is better in some ways, but you need to buy MacOpener for about $40 to use that. Personally, I feel xplay is more stable and I can edit the id tags for multiple songs easily.

Why are you using a Cassette adapter?? You need to be uber geeky and get an iRock. It plugs into the headphone jack and plays the audio through the radio.:Q

I decided to just upgrade to a Sound Blaster Audigy (which comes with Firewire) for use with an iPod - it seemed more worthwhile to upgrade my sound card for $60 than to buy a Firewire card.

Wow! My manager is going to love this! He has a 20GB PC iPod but no cassette player in his card, only a CD player and a radio (I guess!). But this is super-cool and you bet I am going to get one for myself :D Thanks!

The car thing is a big draw for me, I have a two hour drive back home so I usually just record songs onto minidiscs and play them that way. The ipod would be perfect for me.

It sucks that you can't drag/drop music to it to listen though :(. I hate musicmatch and wouldn't want to deal with it and winamp on my system and two different playlists.

I thought the 5gb model had the new wheel too?

Don't use MMJB, it blows. Use ephPod or if you want drag and drop use XPlay. The 5G model does not include the pad, remote, or case.

The iRock sucks. I have never heard of anyone who has had success with one. I tried one for one day and had nothing but problems.

The 5GB uses the old scroll wheel and does not include a case or wired remote.

The Toshiba does not look all that tempting to me. I see little to no benefit to having a removable hard drive when even the 5 GB iPod has more storage space than I would need to store all of my MP3s. It is significantly bulkier, and I seem to recall that it will retail for $599, even though it only has 5 GB. On top of that, I doubt very seriously whether it will have a user interface anywhere near as nice as the iPod's.

The iPod rocks. I love mine. Anyone who owns one will tell you the same thing. You can't go wrong with it.

btw, do you HAVE to use some software to sync? my digital camera shows up as a removable drive in xp, so i can just drag and drop files in windows explorer, is this possible with the ipod? or am i basically forced to have to install some other software....
you have to update the database on the ipod... thats how all the stuff is tracked (artist, title, album info), IIRC. drag n' drop won't do that.
