First, let me get the disclosure out of the way: I work for Bona.

But that's a good thing in this case. Because I know how to handle your problem. 😀

Bona Naturale

There you go. That product will give your floors about a 5-10 gloss (super-matte) so even though your dogs will still scratch up the floors, you won't be able to see it. Seriously. My boss has this in his home, which he shares with two 70+ lb labs. He had prefinished oak floors that the dogs promptly scratched all to hell. We went in and recoated with this product and - guess what - no more visible scratches.

Now, best results will be obtained if you have a pro come in and refinish your floors with the Naturale but if you're a skilled DIY kind of person you can make it look fine easily just following the directions.

You should also check out MyBonaHome for everything else you need for proper care & maintenance of your hardwood floors.

We clean our Brazilian Cherry floors with bona, and afterwards they look like they're covered in some milky residue. I dunno what we're doing wrong.

This is the only pic I have online right now, for reference.

Love the floors, but dude....wood flooring and big windows in a theater room?

The windows get blacked out completely by Lutron powered shades, and my wife won the initial argument against carpet (she hates it) but I couldnt stand the sound and carpeted it about six months ago. She still swears she cant hear the difference 🙁

Women. Can't live with em....pass the beer nuts.

I had it pretty easy. My wife only wanted 2 things when we built the house.

1. A pass thru fireplace.
2. A whirlpool tub in the master bathroom big enough to swim in.

Everything else got to be my decision. 🙂

It doesn't matter if it's oak, cherry, maple, whatever. What's getting scratched is the finish. (Of course, if it's a softer wood & the finish is very thin, then the wood itself may get scratched.) Often, especially with real wood floors, they'll be finished with multiple coats of polyurethane. Not all polyurethane finishes are created equal. I discovered this the hard way - many hours spent refinishing the oak floors in the house, hundreds spent on sandpaper & equipment rental, and I bought a cheap brand of polyurethane finish. Floors looked great... at first. That stuff wore right off from rubber soled sneakers. If I dropped a popcorn kernel on the floor, I was likely to get a scratch.

2nd time I refinished, I spent $$ on an excellent brand of polyurethane. Note: the stuff takes a month or more to cure completely, and during that first month, it's much easier to scratch. Our new dog & our dog got into a fight & scratched the shit out of one area. After that, even with their claws long, they didn't really affect the finish.

Unless you're willing to wash the dogs paws every time it's brought in from outdoors the dog is essentially wearing sandpaper on its feet.

Scratches add character to the wood. :d

What sucks is when the floor is not quite done being built yet, and the cat walks in glue/paint/varnish and then walks all over the BRAND NEW floor. That took a while to buff out. 😛
