Anybody have any opinions on Ikea stuff?

I've had mixed expiriences. Their stuff is alright quality, but you need patience sometimes as it can be confusing to build. (No more or less than other similar furniture I'd imagine, though)

Also they have some products really cheap, and others insanely overpriced. For example, our location had desks cheap. But the chairs were absolutely ludicrous. I figure their logic is that people see the cheap desk, then are lazy or uninformed and make the bad purchase on a chair.

Really like Ikea products, though I think its the catalogs and showcases that really sell their products. The focus on squeezing alot into a small area really appeals to young, non-settled types (like me). I've found that Ikea offers a wealth of decent to very good items at prices that beat any other furniture store.

I am moving into a new apt. soon and to celebrate the move I got:

The "Jerker" Computer desk Linky

The "Leksvik" Coffee Table Linky

And a multitude of cheap little things like these lights I put up in my room: Linky!

I really haven't seen any other company that betters or even equals Ikea in build quality : Price ratio. I am really looking forward to the day when they have a full fledged internet store that would allow people to buy things online instead of having to talk to a rep. UGH!

I have a house full of Ikea stuff. The older stuff is much better. A lot of it was solid wood.

The new stuff is great for temporary furniture, but don't expect it to last. Also, the quality has been questionable lately - just got a table thingy that had cracked & busted parts.

For good furniture think used - find a good auction house.

I have four tables and one lounge from Ikea. The tables are holding up well to probably extra-ordinarily abuse. But the chair is literally falling apart and the cushiion is poorly designed. I will have to use some carpenter glue and screws and nuts to fixed the chair.

I'm exactly the opposite of this. Build quality is very poor (especially the wood products). If you look at the display models they are seperating and feel flimsy. (Virtually none of their products are made out of real wood... all corrugated board.)

Most display models will feel flimsy primarily due to the fact that these are "fast assembled" at the store. Of course once you get it home you'll make every effort to tighten every nut, screw and bolt as necessary.

As far as not being wood goes, for an amateur environmentalist like me, i like the idea of using composites. Safer and more forrest-friendly.

Well, one of my friends was bemoaning the fact that we live in an age of disposable furniture. He was checking out a $500 desk (originally $2000) from an Ebay seller. The desk was 10yrs old and solid as a rock. It'd prolly outlive all of us.

I guess I have to agree with him... my current POS Staples desk is going in the trash in about a year.
