Just about the only option here. DSL isn't out this far, and cable is a fat-pipe dream. The qoute I got is for 256k up/down service, 5 residences minimum must share, $600 installation, $40 per month, 2 year contract. From the sound of it, it doesn't compare to either cable or DSL, but it is the only option to 56k dial-up.

Anybody tried something like this?

almost 0ms

I'm about 1000 feet from the tower...

but even if you're 25 miles or so out, it isn't hardly anything... the signal's instant... it's direct connection...

seems interesting

I was amazed at their prices and requirements:

Pentium Processor
Hard Disk Space - 200 MB
32 MB Ram
NIC Card ($124.88 installed if not built into your computer)
Windows 95

$128.88 for a NIC :Q damn.......

Still the service looks appealing. How fast is business-class service?

Paulson, got a few questions for you:

1. What kind of download speeds do you get (peak and otherwise)?

2. What pings do you get overall? Sounds like you have a direct feed from the ISP. I wonder what this would translate when you have a second distribution tower for the 'hood?

3. Is the home tower easy to maintain? Does it ice up, or get funky when it rains? Is it easy to realign (if it starts to lose signal)?

4. Do you have a static IP(s)?

5. Do they charge you more if you home network to other PC's?

TIA

Goosemaster - This is in a small town where we have about 1 computer shop and they love to rip people that don't know jack about computers off :)

Hideous_Hog:

1. Well, download speed will vary from provider to provider. My ISP (I work for them and try to reason with them) Gives unlimited usage and bandwidth, but only runs at 256kb download. Upload speed, well it really sucks, but that is due to the way ours is set up here (main admins think they know everything but aren't even cisco certified... haha)

2. When the service first started out, I had pings of 30 almost all the time... Due to piss poor management by our admins, pings have went up to about 200... this wont be the case in most areas, I really don't think so, but our isp is struggling, so whatever they can do to get by they're going to try it.

3. The home tower we have is hooked up to our garage (that varies) and has went through 1 tornado (still standing!). It will ice up, but it never loses it's signal due to ice, rain, snow, extreme heat or extreme coldness. Very nice equipment.

4. Yep, I have a static IP address... some users run off of a static but proxy ip address, meaning they really are running like a VPN (for instance the user would have the IP of 10.1.2.24 or something like that) and would run through a proxy client in order to use msn and crap like that. They offer public IP addresses (static ones that can be accessed for websites and ftp's)

5. Well, if you require more than one IP address, they will charge like $9 extra, but (get this) they encourage people to buy routers and split up the bandwidth if needed.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)
