Anybody have a Sony MiniDisc player?

ubid has the MZ-N505 for $80. Is it worth it? What are your opinions on it?

get a mp3 player over it. recording sucks on MD, only can record in real time. I have one, used it 5 times.

i have that model. its pretty decent, too much to say though. ill just say overrall its real good. except i still prefer normal CD players, because i (dont know why) simply still like cds.

btw, thats not true. it records at 32x, lasts near 5x longer on batteries then an mp3 player, and it can often fit more data. you can carry small minidiscs instead of having to erase/rewrite. the discs are cheap. it CAN record in real time, microphone, radio, whatever. and you can load mp3s on it via USB. its like a mini cd burner.

Is it the newest kind (NetMD?). The NETMD doesn't require you to record in real time, you just have to convert it to another file format, and transfer it to the minidisk player.

If it's not the NETMD, it's not worth it.

32x speed is only for LP4 using compression so your wongs will sound about 64kbps. NOT good.
16x speed is for LP2 using compressionso its about 132 kbps.

The store more data is wrong in your context. An MD can store max of 140Mb. It uses compression to achineve up to 320 minutes of music. 80min 1x speed but max quality. 160 min up to 16x speed. 320 up to 32x speed.

The battery life is amazing on the MD's though. My one does 80hrs . MZ E900.

Discs are small. Pretty cheap.

The ah heck is that the netmd's have had problems with software. The Sony software is a bit buggy the earlier versions don't know how it is now.

The remotes are excellent

When you record songs to the MD you have to *convert* them to ATRAC first. The software does this but this will take time and it depends on how fast your pc is. They don't tell you this but you do. It takes the mp3 then converts it to ATRAC format then sends to the MD.

I have 3 Sony MiniDisc's. 2 recorders and one player.

I have a sharp minidisc and for recording concerts there is nothing better price wise than a minidisc with a good microphone and battery box. Unless you get a DAT or something.

And NetMD is horrible its only good if you want to transfer files fast (usb) from your computer.. other than that its a proprietary format that has all sorts of limitations on what you can do.

In my opinion if you are just gonna use a MD to listen to music its much better to just get an mp3 player. If your gonna get an MD to record stuff get a sharp.. they are alot more recording friendly (on the fly recording level adjustment etc) The new DR7 is super sweet and bar none the best to record with.

80 bucks is an excellent price on a netmd recorder. it has it's faults and quirks (bad software), but you can carry around so much more music with MDs instead of flash memory it's worth the trouble.

i dun know if i like the gold casing,but $80 seems like a really good price for a netmd. i picked up the n707 last year and it's sweet. i just wish they had the silver version they have in uk and asia, along w/ the lcd remote that they had.

i use the lp2 mode, fitting in about 160mins of music, at 128kb mp3 quality. (132kbp in ATRAC 3 format) one thing that sucks is the fact that you can only "burn" or rather check out the song 3 times per machine that you used to encode. (for copyright they say, headache for you)

smaller than the hd and cd based mp3 solutions, has more storage/ flexibility than flash type mp3 players. another cool thing is you can record a disk using your netmd, and play the disc back on any MDLP enabled MDPs. some of the super thin ones i saw in japan during my layover were pretty damn cool, jus too expensive..

the battery lasts a long time, and i never had it skip from walking around, neat tech that never took off in the states. btw pick up some better cans, the stock headphones are pretty ugly and crappy. but then again, they are free...

I have an older Sony MZ-R91 and I think it kicks ass!

Its tiny and has great battery life!

I have an MZ-N1 and love it. One nice thing is that you can transfer CD quality sound instead of crappy sounding MP3s. It's soo small too and awsome battery life. I considered an IPod but it would have cost at least 2x as much and I dont like the idea of a hard drive in there if I dropped it.
