What happened?

//Update 1253pm

A few clarifications, points, etc.

1. This person does not have a combat role. They have a BS job in some BS neck of the woods doing BS. I agree that this does not make the person's actions right.

2. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT AGREE WITH WHAT THIS PERSON IS DOING.

3. That being said, I will still support them because I know they would do the same for me.

4. I only have so much clout. I've said my piece to them. Whether or not it made an impact is yet to be seen. They will remain awol for at least another 7 days. What happens after that remains to be seen.

5. Thank you to those who have posted relevant stories/links.

6. To those that I am currently in disagreement with: if I were in YOUR position, I'd probably agree. If this was somebody else's thread, somebody else's situation, I'd probably respond the same way. Hell if this happened to somebody else 2 days ago, I would've said the EXACT same sht.

But, the fact of the matter is, YOU DON'T KNOW UNTIL IT HAPPENS TO YOU. I thought things were on the up and up, but they dropped this bomb on me yesterday. You can sit on your high chair all you want, with your promises to "stop being xxx's friend" and will diligently "turn them in", but when you are actually faced with said situation, it's not as easy as flaming the OP's friend on ATOT.

I don't give a sht if you flame my friend for being an idiot because I wholeheartedly agree. But hey, friends are (incredibly) retarded sometimes, but will I turn my back on them? fvck no.

Update 7/1/07

As expected, tomorrow (Monday) she'll be going back to base to deal with the consequences.

Someone is too chicken to do the duty they volunteered for? Let me guess, they joined for "education"

FPMITAP happens once they catch you if you AWOL long enough to make it desertion I would think.

What's wrong with joining for education? Not only do you get college funds that might otherwise be unavailable, but you get the experience of serving your country. I fail to see how this is bad.

Depends on how long they are gone. Most times they will face NJP and get restricted to post and fined a month or 2 pay. It can get a lot more serious if they miss movement or get accused of desertion. 31 days is the magic number that moves you from UA to deserter.

Nothing if they understand that the bargain works both ways.

I was talking about all those crybabies you've probably seen on CNN/fox/whatever who refuse to obey deployment orders and whine how they joined the service just for the educational benefits.

Odds are this person is gonna be AWOL at least 6 months. Person does not want to go back. Period. I think she should surrender after 6 months instead of being paranoid forever.

Nothing wrong with that. Just don't be bitching when you get sent off to war. the problem comes when people sign up for education benefits without really feeling the desire to serve ones country.

I think she should be sent to Iraq and made the "point" for missions in the field.

Sorry but your friend is a moron. There is no guarantee when he finally turns himself in that they will boot him out and if they do it will have consequences that will follow him around for the rest of his life.

If she goes AWOL she is likely going to end up in prison at the least. If it turns into desertion then during times of war the death penalty is a possibility. She would be MUCH BETTER off to simply do her duty and take her chances like every other person who signed on the dotted line.

I think she should just start acting batsh!t insane and get kicked out.

Either that or take a bunch of narcotics and fail a drug test or three?

FYI, I don't agree with her actions either, and honestly if this was another person's thread I'd respond the same way. But hey, if you were in a similar position you wouldn't want them to get nailed to a post either.

In either case she'll end up with dishonorable discharge which will ruin her chances for decent emplyment for the rest of her life. I can't believe people can be so fugging stupid.

I'd think a dishonorable discharge would be better than going AWOL for six months though ?

Or am I wrong on that?

QFT. A bad-conduct discharge will disqualify your friend from most if not all VA benefits, as well as many other forms of employment and other opportunities in life, and is NOT something your friend wants. She really, REALLY, needs to think about the LONG TERM consequences of her course of action.

You know that line on every application that asks if you ever served in the military? "you want fries with that?" won't even be in her vocab once they're done with her. Maybe sewer cleaner?

Joining the Army for education is stupid. Take out loans and pay them back like everyone else does. The $$ for education bit is a crock, all it does is persuade people who probably won't use the $$ anyways to join the Army while at the same time giving them an "excuse" for doing so.

yeah no sht. They're fiercely independent peoples though, and I don't want to come across as uh overbearing? for lack of a better word because they might just ignore me then. Trying to come up with a laundry list of reasons/recommendations/advice/whatever to tell them when I see them again.
