I'm thinking about getting this desk: http://www.officemax.com/office-furn...ct-prod3300322

I don't feel too comfortable about buying a desk I can't see, but it seems like the office stores only have floor models of the low end desks. All they had was a little block of wood so I could see the material.

Anybody have a Bush desk? Do you like it?

I'd agree if it was the same low/medium density fiberboard used on lower models. Other than that, you are a cheapskate and the reason Wal-mart type places are in business. Nobody wants anything that lasts anymore, or if they do, they want it at ridiculously low prices. A desk should last for over 15-20 years if made/maintained correctly. The people that put the craftmanship into said desk should be working with fairly pricey materials and get a fair wage to put the desk together.

I have built some utilitarian desks before and still ended up dropping over $200 in materials, for 2x4 pine and 4x8 sheets of oak veneer, misc. electrical stuff. My labor was pretty cheap back then, but it took me a while to throw them together.

"L" desks are ideal as you can use one side to rest your elbow on as you mouse. That's a great looking piece of furniture, especially if it's solid cherry.

umm... if it's good quality craftsmanship, and properly maintained, there's no reason a desk shouldn't last a lifetime. or multiple lifetimes.

noone wants anything that lasts anymore, because if you buy good quality, then it locks you in to that piece for life. (if you don't sell it at a huge loss) not all bad, though. the bed frame i use now is 120 years old.(or more..not sure) uses square hand-smithed nails. solid walnut.

We have bush desks in our office. This line:

http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...cat=2000000351

They are quite nice and of high quality (for compressed wood office furniture). They are VERY heavy.

I can say Bush customer support is very good. We bought a table that came damaged, and the rep shipped out a replacement piece no questions ask. Also shipped out one of those plastic grommet thingies that we had lost, without problem.

That said, I know people who are getting rid of their massive office desks because all paper/office stuff is either on the cloud or your laptop. These desks are collecting dust, yet they end up hanging around because they are a pain to get rid of and you can't easily stow them away in a garage.

I've had my 1/2" MDF cheapo desk for more than 10 years. I had to replace the original fasteners with some angle-iron, but 98% of it is still original. It's a massive L desk with a hutch and shelves.

I'm pretty sure its compressed wood with a decent quality laminate top. I'd prefer solid wood, but you're looking at $2000+ for the same type of desk. I'm not willing to spend that much money on my home office.

If you have a local wood worker in town you can pay him $800 and I bet get a as good if not equal desk. I worked for a cabinet maker and we hand made everything and a good desk was 600-1000. All custom made and stained. They will build it, stain it, bring to your house and put together.

I like old govt issue furniture. Made from oak, and there's stuff from before WWII that's in perfect shape aside from dings and dents. They've scrapped so much of that over the years, it depresses me.

That seems surprisingly low, unless you're talking about a very basic design.

Not too basic. Nothing super fancy either but def a pretty piece of furniture. Nicer than anything store bought for the same price for sure.
