Anybody has an ASUS 9600XT (A9600 XT/T(V)D)? How does that auto-speed fan thing work (SmartCooling)?!

Hi,

In another post I asked about the Sapphire 9600 XT Ultimate (silent version of the 9600 XT), but I was also wondering how good the Asus 9600 XT cards are? Anybody has the Asus "A9600 XT/TVD" or "A9600 XT/TD". What's the difference between the TVD and TD model by the way?!

What I would like to know is how that SmartCooling thing works. Does this automatically set the fan speed according to CPU temp without you having to make any settings or doesn't it work that simple? To make it work automatically and simple, which settings do you make on that SmartDoctor program of which you see a screenshot here: http://www.asus.com/products/vga/images/seting-1-b.jpg like do you set fixed RPM or not and what about choosing between "adjust RPM by GPU heat or system load". I don't have the card yet (therefore my questions), but why are certain things greyed out on that picture? Anybody could please explain how this works cause it looks a bit confusing.

Also, is 3000 rpm the lowest rpm you can go, see here: http://www.asus.com/products/vga/smartcooling.htm . How much db does that give cause 3000 rpm is still quite much if you know that Zalman's ZM-OP1 fan in silent mode only makes 1400rpm which gives only 20db according to the Zalman site. Also, is there an option where you can disable the fan since the card has a large heatsink, or wouldn't that be a good idea?!

Mike.

1.) The TVD model has a Video In-Video Out (VIVO) port, whereas the TD model just has a TV-out (S-video) port on it.

2.) It looks like if you turn the Fixed Speed to the "Off" position, the other options will light up. That is how that makes sense to me.

3.) Vid card fans don't make alot of noise, they are practically silent (until they get old and are about to go out). I wouldn't worry so much about the noise level of your vid fan. You prolly couldnt tell a difference in sound from a 3000rpm to a 1400 rpm on such a small fan.

Also, it is not hard to do some research. Before asking everyone on AT, try to find some of the answers yourself.

P.S. Don't listen to all these rich boys who can afford these high dollar cards. The 9600XT is a fine card for now, especially without having to spend an arm and a leg for it. I get sick of ppl downplaying a lesser card just b/c it isn't as good as a top end card. If we could all afford the same things, wouldn't everybody drive a porsche?

Video cards, SILENT? Looks like you haven't gone through alot of em. A popular one (Radeon 9800 Pro) is one of the loudest things you'll ever hear.
