it sucks.
dont carry anything you want to keep around the throngs of drunken idiots.
plan the route home before hand.
memorize it.
write it on a piece of paper.
get hammered.
real hammered.
in case of emergency: consult paper.

its supposed to be fairly warm this new years eve so it'd should be alright. you definitely gotta go there early to stake out your spot. I've never been to to Times Square for New years, but this is the general advice you hear on the news.

i believe alcohol is prohibited at the Time Square event. It is true you shouldnt carry anything like a bag, cause if you do be prepared to be searched by the police as they do security checks.

yes, get there extremely early. the police will have barracades up and they will start directing people traffic flow to cross streets. it gets VERY crowded and as the time gets closer, don't expect to be able to walk 1-2 blocks within 45 minutes. a friend of mine stayed in a times square hotel on new years a couple of years back and it was insane outside.

get out there by 3 PM and you will get a good spot.

don't get too close to where the ball drops or you won't be able to see it. go for smack dab dead center of 7th and broadway.

my sister in laws brother went a couple of years ago. Took them 6 hours to get home, ther masses of people slowed them down, and limited train service.

that is a good idea, worst that will happen is they will keep it. i went 2 years ago and the cop asked what i had in the bottle when i was entering the pen, i told him water and then he said "that's too bad".

EDIT - MAKE sure you bring something to pee in, once you leave, you will not be able to come back into your location. you will NEED something to pee in esp. if you will be drinking.

Okay, I've never been to NYC so this shouldn't bother me but ... it does.

The name of the place is TIMES Square, with an S on the end. As in the New York Times newspaper.

Thank you. Continue.

Edit: dainthomas beat me to it.

Times Sq. closes its fences at 3:30pm this year (closest to the ball drop area). This is 30 minutes earlier than last year for security purposes.

Somehow spending an evening with 100k drunk people, each carrying a bottle of their own urine just doesn't sound like a lot of fun.

It's not. But perhaps it's something everyone should experience once. Being from the City, I've been 3 times while in High School and I'd say that was two too many.

I did the Times Square thing once, and that was enough for me. Make sure to get there at LEAST seven hours early to get a good viewing spot, and make sure to use the restrooms BEFORE you leave.

Oh, and if you want to get yourself on TV... Make sure to stand by the edge of the fences, and wear a pair of those stupid looking 2006 glasses.
