Back home, there was the "occupational privilege tax," $52/yr.

That's what they called it when I worked in Pittsburgh .. and that's basically what it was, corrupt official subsidy tax. It funded all the handouts to the welfare recipients to keep putting those politicians back in office. I think they were just mad that I lived out of the county and didn't pay their outrageous property taxes.

Now they collect it $1/week. Originally they wanted the first $52 out of everyone's paycheck, but the low-income folks screamed bloody murder.

I love the Pittsburgh area, but the voters in the city of Pittsburgh are sheep. (Compared to other metro areas, the city of Pittsburgh is geographically small - the vast majority of the people in the area do not live in the city proper.) But those city residents will vote in every Democrat on the ballot no matter what. There are people with zero experience who have been elected to city offices only because they have the same last name as a well-known politician, and people assume they are related.

Not an occupation tax by that name, but over the years, I've worked in places where I had to pay:
Federal Income Tax
State Income Tax
County Income Tax
City Income Tax

As a non-resident, (or part-year resident) I could usually get at least a partial refund on the state tax, but never a penny back of the local taxes. (IIRC, I was able to deduct them from my federal return though.)

An occupation tax is different than an income tax in that it's a flat fee ($52 for Pittsburgh) just for the privilege of having a job. Doesn't matter if it's part time minimum wage or big bucks.
