A couple of months ago we were told our department was moving to corporate hq by June. Well, looks like there's a good chance that they will offer me a job in RI. We had phone interviews last week and the dept manager is supposed to be here this week for more interviews.

My knowledge of RI is limited. I know the Griffiths are from Quahog :). I love to say Woonsocket.

What else do I need to know?

My wife and I would probably fly up there within a few weeks to scope out housing, etc.

**UPDATE** 5/20

They offered me the job and are covering expenses so we can check out the local area. We're flying up on Sunday and coming back on Tuesday evening.

Come on ATOT, give me the d/l on where to go and what to do :)

We're checking out apartments in East and West Providence, Cranston, and a few others.

My wife is a bartender and hopes to land a job in a martini bar around Providence.

Looks like the tentative date is July 1st.

**FINAL UPDATE 6/12**
We stayed in West Warwick, visited Providence, Naragannsett, and of course my company's corporate HQ. Everything up there was much smaller than anticipated, and closer geographically. Except downtown Providence. Quite possibly the cleanest city I've ever seen.

We did manage to eat at Hemenway's and visit the beach in Naragansett. We also checked out a few apartments. We're still undecided on taking one apartment imparticular in Cranston. We'd be a couple of miles from I-295 and I-95, about 30 minute drive from work.

At any rate, thanks for your comments and suggestions. I've lived in St. Louis all of my life, so this is going to be a totally new experience. My company is taking care of everything to relocate, including shipping our belongings, vehicles, and temporary residence. So instead of losing my job, I"m getting a chance to move to the East and getting a promotion.

Hey an ex-gf of mine lives near Woonsocket (pronounced "Woon sah KAY" - goddamn frenchies)

It's a NICE area. Gets cold, but dunkin' donuts EVERYWHERE, and it's near Providence which is one sweet city.

Providence is great. You should know that our former mayor is in jail. There's no tax on food or clothes, otherwise it's 7%. Lots of good restaurants.

Woonsocket has it's sh!tty areas as well. There are, however, some nice towns not too far from providence, which is a pretty nice city now.

/goes to school in Smithfield, RI on a small campus surrounded by hicks and cows.

First, Natick is in MA, not RI. Second, the twinkie factory closed several years ago.

Woonsocket: Armpit of the world.
Wrong, Central Falls, RI is the armpit of the World.

just a few things about RI:

there are much nicer towns than Woonsocket
Bristol is host to the country's oldest 4th of July parade
if you prefer your 4th to be less traditional, you can go the Ancient & Horribles Parade
There are the semi-official/official drinks in RI: coffee milk and Del's
TF Greene airport is host to some sweet airfare deals with several discount airlines.
If you move to either Foster or Gloster, RI, be prepared for tons of snow.

There is a Natick Road in Warwick, RI, but no town of Natick. There was a Twinkie factory in Natick, MA but it closed several years ago; it was never in RI.

Since google made an error, do you think the value of the IPO will fall?

BTW, the Family Guy was a joke; not meant to be a source of factual info, besides the lie about the RI Twinkie factory, there is and never was a Buddy Cianci Jr High.

Rhode Island is a great place to live.
NewPort is great in the summer
Providence is an awesome small city.

And the best food in the world can be found in RI.
Heminway's Seafood (Providence)
Cumberland House of Pizza
J's Deli (Cumberland)
Pot -E fur (Providence)
Andinos (Providence)
Stanly Hamburgers (Central Falls)
the list is too long to even bother to continue.

There isn't a Quahog, RI.

Also I have never every heard anyone pronounce Woonsocket, "Woon sah KAY"
And I have lived here for awhile. I always heard it pronounced Wun-sa-kett.

Nice thing about RI, and really no matter where you work, you can live almost anywhere in RI,
without having to worry about a long ride to work.

Knowing where you are now would allow me to tell you what more to expect.
The weather is typical New England weather.

Newport is a great place in the summer.

And I agree with AvesPks Central Falls is the armpit of the World.

Oh and like LeadMagnet said, there is some great food in RI.
And if you like seafood is really good.

I grew up in Cumberland which is "side by each" (adjacent) to Woonsocket. Woonsocket is it's own strange little world.

Just want to let you know to avoid housing in Woonsocket, Pawtucket, CF if you have kids - the schools are lousy - bordering on pathetic. The better schools are in N Smithfield, Lincoln, Cumberland (depends what part of town you live in), N Attleboro - MA. To get a better idea on the schools, RI does a SALT survey which used to be online if you need further details about communities.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. This is the type of info we're looking for.

I'd be living near Providence.

I've always pronounced it the same as you. But what do I know, I'm from St. Louis.

Bump because the mgr of the new dept is flying here next Thursday to give me a 2nd interview. If it goes well (and if the $ is right) they'll fly me up to RI for a final interview.
