So I just got my first 2 EPYC 32 core 7551's, and they don't come with the plastic holder like the threadripper. Is this normal ? The blue plastic part in this picture is missing from mine

OK, update. I looked at the CPU and the socket. There is only one way it will go and no room for it to move once in place. So I put them in and locked them down with the torque tool from my threadripper. All went as usual, so I think the plastic is only to help you align the CPU while putting it in, so you don't bend any pins. I was so careful, I am sure all went well. No now I need 16 sricks of ram (due tomorrow) to see if it will boot. Its version 2.0 for the motherboard, and they said it would only work on version1. We will see.

Best thread on webs! Please keep updating with photos. What all is going into the build?

These are not overclockable?
Not all sure yet. Its just for DC (distributed computing) to help cure cancer. CPU's memory, and thats about it.

Man you are pulling out all the stops! Any reason specifically you went for 1st gen Epyc instead of Rome? The 7502 for same price looks like it might be a fair bit better? (Not that I'm knocking it - if you got a great deal, or had the hardware, or whatever -- all awesome -- and great for the cause!)

The 7502 is $2800 each. I paid $300 each for these. IF they work. it was a good deal.

Holy crap... that's a HEAVY discount. I just saw at retail it looked like 7551 was >$2000 but man... what a deal!

Are you putting them in 2P or separate systems?

For one, its because they are ES chips. Also, it may be very hard to find a motherboard they work in. I will know later today. They are in a 2p right now..

Did you get them from ebay?? If so you are lucky as heck cause I offered that guy $450-$500 and he wasnt even interested in my offers. :(
I also tried for 7601p but also got turned down for all 10 offers on those as well.
Be Careful when not using the blue plastic cradle clip cause your cpu can slide out of line with some pins on the motherboard and all kinds of crazy things can happen, like ram sticks not showing and ports stop working or entire rig crashing or not even posting.
If you have some lower Epyc parts you are upgrading from, I would just take the clips from those and put them on your 7551's just to be safe then sorry..
