Anybody ever had such an experience?

The other day at 4-5 in the morning, I went to the washroom and sat down. Soon after that I felt really light headed, felt really hot, lost most of my strength to hardly move, and vision began to get blurry. I quickly try to get up, with much effort. As I do so my sight gets worse. Both eyes begin to shutdown. By the time I reach the door to my room (a few feet away) I was completely blacked out, couldn't see a thing. When I'm on my bed I was sweating like crazy, my t-shirt was totally soaked, my forehead was dripping wet as well.

Anybody had such an experience before?

On a few other occasions, at random times I lose sight for several seconds. One time I even lost sight and fell to the ground.

Is this what is known as going into a blackout??

Well, blackouts are caused by diminished circulation to the brain and retina. Stress and dehydation can cause this, but I'm sure there is other causes. If this happens more than 3-4 times within a day I would go see a doctor. It might be temporary, but if it's consistent get medical help ASAP

Well I sometimes go thru something similar to this. Ill get up and all of a sudden my vision goes kinda *starry* and then just blacks out for a few seconds. I don't really worry about it though, I think mines caused to dehyrdration most of the time. Not positive though.

That happens to me too. I think it's because when you suddenly get up you have less blood flow in your brain.

BlipBlop, I'm not sure what hypoglycemic is exactly.

Yes, sometimes when I stand up to go somewhere, that happens as well. My pop's a repairman, so I follow him everywhere, some of which are dangerous places. I try not to stand too close to the edge all the time.

Well, I am sick right now (almost recovered), so dehydration could be a possible cause. It occurs randomly, along the lines of about once every 3 months. I should get it checked just in case, get some kind of medication for it (if any?), cause I do drive and it can be quite dangerous and deadly.

Thx fellas,
Plucky

I would get it checked out-sometimes you hear about stuff like this happening and people find out they have a tumor in their brain or something.

Happened to me once.. I was watching tv, and had been sitting down for some time, and when I got up suddenly, I felt giddy, and my vision started going black.. I took a deep breath and the feeling went away.

Of course I did. I feel extremely sick, but I don't have any official illness. I had such conditions a few years ago. Now I just feel bad, but don't feel like that. I suggest you visit a doctor and he will most likely tell you what it can be.

Happened to me when I was sick and rode my bike 2 miles in the rain to get to class (yeah, yeah, should have stayed home). I was standing outside waiting for the TA to open the door when I just blacked out and collapsed face-first onto the pavement. Twice. It was very painful and embarassing 😛

You should probably see a doctor if it happens more than once.

This happened to me a few time. Everytime i run on the tread mill for a exteneded period of time at a fast pace, If i get off immediatly, i get all dizzy/cold/blur vision, etc. But after a little bit its fine. I never actually lost vision or blacked out completely.

yep and for me it was called panic (anxeity -sp?) attacks.

Hope it is just blood sugar or something for you. I have hypoglycemia it is not that hard to keep levels so you don't get faint just takes eating correctly at the right time and amounts.

But w/ Hypo usually it is in the morning or happens if you have gone to long w/o food. Doesn't sound like that was your case.

most likely dehydration. lack of liquids lower your blood pressure, which means less blood goes to your brain. when you stand up, all that blood that wasn't moving as much suddenly goes down to your legs, and you get less pumped to your brain, so you get that "starry" vision that cuda1447 was talking about. if you're dehydrated enough, something like what happened to you can occur, and the fact that you were sick can compound the problem.

btw, i think the condition you are describing is called "vertigo"

EDIT: and its even more likely if its real early in the morning, or if you just woke up - your blood pumps slower while youre sleeping.

hmm... i just thought of something. your profile says you live in canada, but is it particularly warm right now? or are you wearing sweatshirt, sweatpants, or any type of warm clothing? your symptoms actually sound a little bit like heat exhaustion, especially feeling hot, the vision loss, and the losing strength. best thing to do in that case is to lie down, strip down to your underoos, and put a damp cloth on your forehead (get someone else to get it for you)

PeeluckyDuckee,

What you described is called a vasovagal attack. Depending on what you were doing on the toilet (usually its number two... 🙂 ), you most likely had a momentary imbalance in your autonomic nervous system (the part not under your conscious control, that controls your respiratory rate, heart rate, gastric secretions, etc), which causes all of the symptoms you described. I've seen this fairly frequently. Low blood pressure during the attack is part of the symptom/sign complex that is seen, and this can cause a momentary decrease in cerebral blood flow which causes people to black out.

PM me if you want more information.

Hey, same thing happened to my sister in the bathroom last week.
I think she bumped her elbow.
Then she said she lost eyesight, hearing and was about to faint. She thought she was going to die.
Don't know the cause though.
