Anybody ever had an ant farm? I'm going to get into this big time.

I've always wanted to have one. Anybody have or had one? Was it fun? Did you have a queen? I put in a request on ants canada to give me some contact info where I can get an ant queen (pregnant) in or around Houston. Hope to have her soon! Only costs like $25 or $30.

I just ordered one of those cheap clear plastic thin ones with the green pieces around it that were everywhere when I was a kid. That will just be temporary. I'm going to build some badarse multi-building ant farm with clear tubes connecting everything. Lots of compartments for them to store stuff in and care for their brood in.

Plus its going to be so much fun feeding them insects and stuff and watching the ants tear them apart! Then dumping shovel-fulls of other ants from the yard in there and watching them do battle haha.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Also, I've read its illegal to ship queen ants accross state lines. But if I find someone who has, for example, driver ants, already living in Texas (where I live), can I buy one from him or her without ramifications? So long as I don't transport it accross state lines?

It would be fun to have all these exotic ant species, then when they have baby queens/males release them into the wild and see how they do.

Thanks for those unhelpful, trolling posts IronWing. If you have anything helpful or relevant to post on this topic at hand, I would sure like to hear it! Thanks.

Man, ive always wanted to have a sweet ant farm setup ever sine i saw an episode of Mr. Wizard back in the 80s. He had jars full of dirt, and covered with paper. Between the jars of various sizes were clear plastic tubing to connect them.

Early 90s i finally got one of those Uncle Milton ant farms (think plastic ones). you sent away for the ants. they came in a tube and thrived with a diet of sugar water. It was fairly depressing to watch their graveyard grow and grow until there was only one member left. Then one fateful day, his body was just a shiveled husk, with no burial, just lying by the lime green barn. It was a sad day.

But id totally do it again with a proper setup and a queen. would be fun.

Oh, I know PottedMeat. But I kind of want to start one from basically scratch, to know that I had truly created the tribe and helped it thrive pretty much from the beginning.

Boomer, are you talking about what are called "crazy" ants? Yea, I think there are several varieties of them. Are you sure the raspberry ones are in Texas? I thought it was the black crazy ants from Argentina that are in Texas (and damn near every other place haha). Thanks.

Salty, before you get into this "hobby" any deeper ... check out the multiple videos available on YT. There are some really "passionate" antkeepers out there ...

Ants Canada videos were the best I've found overall. If you thing there are others that are particularly helpful do share anyone!

I had one when I was a kid. It was basically my sand box. I'd watch their whole process throughout the summer. The flying ants come in, lose their wings, then start to setup shop. I had like 4 colonies going at once. At some point there was a redemption day, where it involved a large flood and only the strongest survived. The Tonka crews would do their best to dam the hive from the flood, but it would eventually get breached as the hose was turned up higher.

LOLOL! That's what I'm talking about!

All 4 colonies were in a single sandbox Red Squirrel? How did you stop them from killing each other? Or did you just let them battle it out, with only the strong surviving?

Lol I don't actually remember the whole details of it, I was just a kid playing in a sandbox, but kinda learned about their life cycles just from watching them every year. That's going quite far back so about as much as I remember. 😛
