Anybody ever bought an open box CPU from Newegg?

Hi, I need a new AMD X2 3800+ CPU and I was looking through newegg. I don't need a retail box one, but the only OEM one they have is open box.

Has anybody ever purchased an open box AMD CPU from newegg? What is the quality/condition of the chip?

If anybody can comment, it is greatly appreciated.

I have bought 3 open box items from newegg in the past 12 months: an x1900 xtx crossfire 512mb, an msi 975 powerup edition mobo, and an asus a8v-xe mobo. All 3 were shipped in perfect condition. I think that the msi 975 didn't have all the cables but I had tons of those lying around. The asus mobo I bought 10 days ago, it looked like it was never even opened! I saved btwn 15-30% on those items, too.

Well the open box items on newegg only come with the product itself and no other accessories such as cables or i/o plates. When you buy open box your getting someone else's stuff that has been returned or rmaed. These items are then tested to see if there are ay defects and if there isn't any then they resell them. Also are you looking for a S939 or a Socket AM2 cpu? let me know through private message.

The low and mid range cpus are virtually the same price as new, when you factor in shipping. Many new cpus come with free shipping, which negates the few dollars you save on open box. Only the high end cpus are discounted enough to make it worthwhile.

they don't GUARANTEE that anything else will be included. They recommend that you are prepared to supply peripheral equipment. Fortunately, I have had 3 good experiences with their open box items. I have noticed that their cpu's are often not a whole lot better in price, however, so make sure that you're saving money.

I've bought four or five open box retail CPU kits from Newegg in the past. All worked fine. A couple looked they had never even been installed. Another couple had all kinds of thermal paste slopped on them, but worked fine with a little cleanup.

IMHO, Newegg refurbs aren't as good as they were a few years ago. They had fewer DOA and almost always free shipping.

i have bought quite a few open box items on new egg.

recently i bought 2 of the same 939 m/bs as they were less than 1/2 the cost of the original. 1 came just like it would if it was retail, the other was just the m/b, so ymmv.

for a cpu, i would probably want some kind of guarantee as the items i have bought all carry their own - ram, m/bs, hdds, etc

Gotta wonder why they were returned in the first place, best assumption would be they didn't oc to a level the returner hoped to get. This means that if you're hoping to oc and hit 2.8gHz plus then these might no be for you.

PS - I just picked up a used Manchester (with the crappier hsf) for $50 shipped

iirc they do NOT test the items for defects before they resell them. You can find out for sure by reading Newegg's open box policy... I'm feeling lazy right now.

While it is certainly possible that newegg would re-ship items that were returned as "defective" without testing them, it doesn't seem likely considering their customer service record. Again, I've bought 3 items with great results. Has anyone out there ever bought an open box item at newegg that didn't work?

i had bought some fast pc3200 mushkin ram that was less than 1/2 off (a couple years ago when 1GB was expensive) and honestly didn't care if it worked or not because of mushkin's return policy. 1 stick was bad and mushkin replaced it no problem, so yes it was bad but it wasn't a big deal.

but i am really not ever in a rush so to me it doesn't matter if i need to rma a product i get for such a deal, if in fact it is a deal. i have seen some items that are more expensive in their open box are than the brand new side.

I bought a Sapphire X800 GTO that artifacted at stock clocks, so that had to go back. I've RMAed a mobo, but I've also recieved several open-box mobos that appeared to work fine.

yes, you do have to be careful. they have several cpus that are more expensive right now b/c the open boxes don't hav mir.

I've got a freezer 7 pro that's using right now open boxed, and that thing as far as I can tell the original owner didn't touch. So it's pretty much new. But I haven't bought a cpu from them yet open boxed.

I've bought boards and a few other returned or "open box" parts from Newegg with no trouble, but the one time I bought an open box CPU it was fried. I haven't bought any other open items since then. I know this doesn't help your comfort level but that was my experience. The difference in prices now between some new and open box items isn't worth the possible shipping charge and wasted time for me to take a shot again.

I found this note during checkout... "Newegg.com does not test any product, including open box items"

Also, the warranty is seriously limited with open box\returned items. Bummer....

It seems like they would but they don't. The CPU had enough thermal compound for 5 CPUs. When I cleaned it up I could see it was visibly scorched, and I still got got popped for a restocking fee! It wasn't much and I suppose I could have called and raised a little hell with them but I didn't. I think it was around $15 plus the shipping and time wasted to send it back.

On the plus side I picked up some excellent motherboards before getting pinched on the processor.
