Anybody else with the CM 590 have build quality issues?

I've had this case for a few weeks now, and I was actually kind of surprised at the poor quality. I was using an Antec SLK2650-BQE before, and I wanted to replace it with something that had a side intake or top mounted fan so I could switch from the stock Intel cooler to a tower style heatsink and still have some airflow over the mosfet/northbridge area.

I narrowed my choices down to either the CM 590 or the Antec 300. I could've gotten the 300 for about $38, and the 590 was $59. I decided to pay the premium mainly for the cable management features of the 590, but I also liked the 3.5" drive cage that could be placed anywhere and had rubber mounts to reduce vibrations. The 590 also had space for a side intake fan directly over the CPU area while the 300 only had one for the VGA area.

So after getting the case the first thing I noticed was that the side panels were thinner than the ones on my SLK2650. It's not that big of a deal, but the right side panel was actually bowed a bit, and it doesn't fit squarely. There's a gap that can clearly be seen when looking from the top down, and another one along the bottom front edge of the case where light from the LED fan leaks out making it even more noticeable. I've had some sub $20 cases where the side panels aren't quite square and don't sit perfectly flush, but this case was about $60.

But the thing that really shocked me that I've never seen before, even on super cheap generic cases, was half the holes for the motherboard standoffs were actually drilled in crooked, while some were drilled properly. The standoffs would screw in at an angle and not sit flush against the tray, I had to use a screw and a screwdriver to actually force the standoffs in and re-thread the holes so they were a little more straight.

The left side panel is also warped or something. It takes me a few minutes to get it lined up just right so it can be locked back into place, very annoying. I've never had such difficulty getting a side panel on with any other case I've owned.

They also used hard plastic case feet instead of rubber. The case can slide around on my wooden desk very easily with just a light nudge, and unlike rubber that can leave scratches.

I kind of regret buying this over the 300, I could've saved $20 and gotten a better quality case. A few more zip ties would've been enough to deal with the extra cable clutter. Has anyone else had similar issues with their 590, or did Newegg just send me bottom of the pallet stock?

Yep, in the same boat here. My left side panel doesn't line up with the screwholes on the chassis and there's a gap so I'll have to enlarge the holes on the side panel. However, my standoffs are fine. I was going to exchange it but then read about a bunch of people having the same problems so I just bit the bullet and decided to make do with it.

Aside from having to press on the middle of the side panels a bit to slide them into place, nothing's really that out of place on mine. Then again, I care more about cooling capability than fit/finish, so there may very well be imperfections on mine that I've just glossed over. The thing about the left side panel is that there's a notch cut into the back edge of the panel to accommodate the tab on the back of the case used for padlocks, so if those aren't lined up, it's not going to slide into place.

I didn't get mine from NewEgg though, I got it from ClubIT a few days before they went under and filed for bankruptcy...

Well, the SLK series of cases were quite well made - OEM by HEC/Compucase. The 590/690 are relatively large and porous cases for low bucks. Apparently they are OEM by A Plus Case (not a top tier maker) as Tagan now has a variant in their lineup (see the thread I recently posted). Many have noted that the panels are kind of bendy. It's a wonder you can get any case that size at that price with the value of the dollar these days. Expect budget case to have thinner metal now wherever it can be gotten away with and high-end cases to go up in price substantially.

Seems to be kind of hit or miss, but those of us that do have problems all experience the same defects, so it doesn't exactly sound like a fluke. Or maybe all the people leaving positive reviews just haven't had a quality case before? Come to think of it, I don't believe I've ever owned any CM products other than their fans, until now.

I own three CM cases including the 590 and I'll have to say the other two are better in build quality. CM is slipping.

The WaveMaster and Praetorian are nearly prehistoric, but they made C-M's reputation along with the original Stacker (still one of the best cases for an extreme system)...

Been using a Centurion5 for a few years and I like it. Build quality is excellent, especially considering I paid 45$ for it. The newer models might be worse...
