i just got off the phone with a female friend, was telling me about how horny and territorial she was, and i came to this realization (well i realized it a long time ago but only put it into words recently).

basically, girls have what are considered male characteristics, such as aggressiveness and horniness, except that the characteristics are stronger in girls than in men, but they hide it better.

i wonder why our society seems to think the opposite... my friend's hypothesis was that it's because girls are physically weaker and are thus more covert about it. dunno... any thoughts?

It's because they hide it better. You answered your own question! A-ha! seriously though, since society isn't related directly to how the girls act (horny etc,) because they hide it well.. there is reason to believe that the society notices the men when they act w/ such primitive motives because they in fact hide it poorly....

This does not mean that women are "sneaky" -- it is just that we are not socially permitted (to a great extent) to exhibit power in the way men have traditionally done. It's changing somewhat, but is still the case. Think about all of the double standards that were encountered during the sexual revoultion and women's liberation movements. A woman who has aggressive or "masculine" characteristics is considered freakish or called a ***, etc. A woman with a strong sex drive is called a slut, while a guy is a "stud", etc.

yea, i agree, there certainly are a lot of double standards, both ways. personally, i get turned on when a girl tells me she's horny. maybe i'm just weird... i don't think a horny girl is a slut necessarily though. you're only a slut if you act on the impulse often, imho.

i'm under the impression that you have issues regarding the male gender that is tainting your perspective. having said that, i agree, men are often times the perpetrators of pretty bad stuff. this however, does not invalidate the usage of the word "slut" to accurately describe a woman who is sexually promiscuous. whether or not a woman is a slut because of a man's wrongdoing, is another issue.

I think both genders have a varying sex drive based on age, physical fitness and mood. Anyone know any medical studies that have examined the difference in sex drive between men and women?

In most western societies female adultery is considered worse than male adultery. I suppose this is because the male is always unsure about whether the child is his. In evolutionary terms he is wasting his child raising effort if the child isn't his and so our patriarchal society sees this as betrayal by the woman.
