Anybody else have issues with Crysis + a late model Lite-On DVD drive? UPDATE: Fixed via firmware (link inside)

I have the EVGA bundled Crysis DVD, works great in an external DVD drive (LG GSA-E10L) but both of my internal Lite-On LH-20A1L drives make popping/clicking noises and won't read the disc. Google returns threads on other forums with the same issue (and lots of accusations about pirated discs), but no solutions. Others have gone through several retail discs with the same issue before determining it's an issue with the drive, so it's obviously something with that disc.

Gamespot Example
OverClock.net Example
Extreme Overclocking Example

I've updated the firmware on the Lite-On drives with no improvement.

Obviously I could just leave the external permanently connected, but that seems retarded when just one disc has issues. Plus I need that drive for other purposes, & I shouldn't have to jump through such hoops just to read a damn DVD.

Anybody else stuck in this situation?

UPDATE:

If anyone is still having this issue or still cares, firmware BL06 resolved this issue for my LH-20A1L drives. After finally finding my Crysis DVD it loaded right up the very first time I put it in:

I've heard of this happening. Apparently it's something to do with the copyright protection on the disc which is making it unreadable. People are reporting it happens with Bioshock too. Sadly I don't have a straight up solution, but there probably are ways around it. You could try looking for a nocd fix for the game, but those can sometimes be shiesty. Otherwise A program like Alcohol 120% I believe will allow you to make a virtual drive, then you could just load the whole disc into that if you've got the HD space and it will act as a DVD drive with the disc inserted.

I had the same problem as Viper, though I eventually was able to play the game with the Lite-On drive. Nevertheless, I replaced my Lite-On LH-20A1L with a Samsung drive and had no further problems. I had assumed that my drive was bad because of all the "popping/clicking" noises and did not associate it with the Crysis DVD.

It's the POS Lite-on drive. I put up with a Lite-on for over a year and each time I put in a new CD/DVD, I had to pray for it to work. Half of my DVD movies and some of my DVD games did exactly what your drive did: click, click, click for 10 minutes before showing an error. Even better was that it was already a replacement and it wouldn't allow me to upgrade my firmware.

Got an LG H22 and for a year now, it hasn't even hiccupped.

I've gone through 2 perfectly good drives, one pretty new, one brand new right out of the box. It's the disk. It makes clicking noises and appears that it won't read, but after about 45-60 seconds, it starts up just fine.

I dumped my Lite-on drive cause the POS wouldn't read a bunch of stuff. Haven't had to deal with that problem once since I got an LG.

I have a phillips DVD drive and it clicks and makes noise... I just leave it in there and it plays so I play and now that I beat it I passed my faulty disk on to a friend.

I quit using Lite-on drives a few years ago. Never seen crappier drives - lucky if they lasted even a year, and some would go in a matter of a few months. Now I use either LG or Samsung and both of these brands have performed very well.

That sure takes care of the problem. Went from the BL05 to BL06 firmware and now the game loads right up.

Glad to see someone benefit from my bumping the thread.

Yes, we're all aware that Lite-On drives are not of spectacular quality. When I bought them they were essentially the only readily available SATA + lightscribe burner out there, and at $25 apiece or whatever I paid for them they are disposable. When they die (as I know they will) I will replace them with something better. For now though they do everything I need.

I'm going to edit the title to reflect the fix now that it has been verified by another person.
