You know, where you remember the playgrounds you used to play at in hindsight were deathtraps waiting to happen? Of course, I grew up in the time before litigation for the smallest thing became an American hobby.

But I remember the playgrounds being blacktop, not this wood chip or shredded recycled tires crap. When you went down during a game of tag, you got a nice battle scar to show off for your efforts. And the swingsets, covered with rust, were like shipwrecks in the ocean overgrown with barnacles. Tetanous shot? BAH! We fought it off with our bodies' immune systems, and we liked it. Was all a part of growing up strong and not a pansy like today's kids. Jungle gyms were like the Thunderdome, and whomever kept the high ground before the recess bell rang went back inside feeling like Achilles after he defeated Hector.

And then there was the "Merry Go Round". I remember us kids getting on, and a bunch of kids running around the thing spinning it faster and faster, until those onboard got shot off one by one onto the unforgiving blacktop.

::sigh:: I miss those days. :(

When your first child falls off something high and dies, you can read this thread and tell yourself, "At least he/she was manly"

My child will be busy enjoying life, while your child will be running around with a helmet and mouthguard, with pillows strapped to their body so they don't get hurt in any way.

ahhh. the old days. one time we were playing soccer during PE and evantually it turned to something like rugby with no rules. It got totally out of hand since the teachers weren't watching us and 2 kids got banged up pretty bad . I think one sprained his leg and other either sprained or broke his arm. We all got banged up but it was hella fun.

Another fond memory was when we were playign football unprotected on the blacktop. This one big kid went up to recieve and came down bad and literally FLAtTENED the kid trying to cover him. I mean him sandwiching a kid as tall as his shoulder's height to the blacktop. For a sec we thought he was dead for sure but he had a big burn but he sucked it in and we played on.

worst thing ever happen to me was slipping at full speed at a lucnh bench and flipping over it. THAT was NOT fun...

those were the days man... getting sacked on blacktop and playing on.

I'm only 18 and those are the type of playgrounds I grew up on...well, except for the concrete part. It was gravel instead.

A kid jumped and grabbed onto these monkey bars, his legs swung forward and he lost his grip and powerbombed himself from like 9 feet and broke his arm.

And we all used to piss down the slide for the out of town n00bies who didn't know how dirty this park really was. We all marked the territory, probably like 30 of us, all the time and everyday. Those slides were disgusting and the stupid n00bs would use them.

Then one day we found a turd on the slide.

Playing "it"/chase in a playground with big stone walls.
One of the walls was home, any kid could have run into it quite hard, maybe been pushed by someone trying to catch them, and smacked their face into the wall.

<- lost half a front tooth from that.

If you believe the safety police of today, no one over 35 should be alive. We all should have been killed by all the unsafe things we did and places we played.

One day, we will all be confined to padded rooms covered in cation labels.

Was playing chicken on the monkeybars with my brother. You know, the game where you pull eachother down with your legs?

Let's just say I lost, and ripped the skin off my chin thanks to the rocks.

I remember those times. My hands used to be stained with rust every time I came home, and I'd have a new scar or something, e.g. rope burn, falling off too high, etc.

Those were the days. Yup, chicken on the monkey bars.

How about those aluminum slides that got to 1000F in the sun, then had the frayed razor sharp edge at the top. You got the 3rd degree burn/disembowlment treatment from that one :D

All my life I'd wanted to be older so I didn't have to wait to do the things I wanted to do.. now all I want to do is be 6 years old in a playground again, daydreaming about how wonderful life's travels would be; if I only knew then what I know now.

Yeah, I'm the same way. My whole childhood I wished for the future, and now that I'm here, I wish for the past.

The playground used to be on the outskirts of a few baseball fields.

One time this girl Crystal was going across the monkey bars and caught a homerun in the chest.
