Anybody else had to reactivate their Vista for no reason?

Short story is I activated my Vista online in January(had no problems all went well), today I notice it was saying 1 day left until needing to be activated,I thought WTF?.. so tried to activate online again and it said "already in use" (do note never reinstalled or added any new hardware).

I phoned Microsoft and they said its a well known problem so gave me a new activation number which worked.
I suggest you check yours is activated (even if you have already done so like I did )to be on the safe side.

Btw their phone system sucks, automated voice kept saying "Windows XP" lol rather then Vista, glad I spoke with a Indian women in the end to get it sorted.

But, but, Vista is perfect and flawless!!!

Heh, seriously, good tip, and glad that MS sorted it out properly for you.

This does sort of support my theory that Activation nonsense punishes regular paid users with inconvenience (time=money!!!), while the real pirates go on unscathed and undeterred.

Funny, happened to me just yesterday. I got a "2 days left" to activate. I tried to reboot to see if that would clear up the problem, and it won't straight to reduced functionality mode. I have a legit OEM copy. Microsoft cleared it up with a 15 minute phone call to the phone activation.

Looks like Microsoft is being a bit aggressive in attempting to find pirates - a major software install will trigger this. In my case it was Sony Vegas 7. Hardware changes I understand, but this should never trigger based off a software change - ever.

Probably some programming oversight in the OEM/retail copies that was not deleted and left from the beta versions.

Microsoft has time-bombed the RC1 and RC2 versions of Vista for the end of May. At around the 18th, the software was sending out notices that the betas would expire soon. I believe the reactivation cheat would still work, though.

In my case, I received the post-beta, pre-RTM version build 5840 of Vista Ultimate free from Microsoft three months ago--with a free Office Professional 2007--for attending their market launch in Detroit. Hopefully, it won't time bomb on me. Others who had this build advanced their computer clocks past the end of May without problems. So, maybe I'll luck out. That is, if getting Vista for nothing is such a great bargain, considering all the problems and time spent on software patches and insufficient driver support...

This is why I have legit copies and use the tricks/hacks online to get around this stuff. I need my OS to work and can't be saddled with going to a meeting and having my laptop not work.

Ditto, I keep them around for when I don't have time to wait for Microsoft to hassle me while I get someone's obviously legal copy of XP reloaded or repaired.

Activation ONLY hurts paying customers.
