I buy from the deli counter. The last time I bought prepackaged meat was because I needed it for lunch sandwiches and the deli counter was closed. I couldn't believe how terrible it was. NEVAR AGAIN!

if your cold cuts are slimy, you're buying the wrong stuff or you're eating rancid coldcuts.

Consuming that stuff is like singing folksongs for a nuclear village.

Well...it's not like it's good for you or anything. It's loaded with all kinds of chemicals and perservatives. Better to cook chicken/turkey/roast yourself and thinly shave off pieces for sandwiches.
or you can go to the deli and have them thinly shave off pieces of the chicken/turkeys/roasts that they made themselves ;)

how many supermarkets have meats that were actually cured/cooked somewhat artisanally instead of in an industrial process, let alone done in store?

fresh deli meat is the best, but too damned expensive. i love fresh baked turkey breast, bloody roast beef, and brisket out of the steamer. sucks that i can't afford to spend $15+ on lunch daily.

for those lucky enough to live in socal, langers, canters, and brents are great spots for a sandwich.

Pre-packaged meats + fast food = living science experiment. It isn't hard to discern why immigrants experience higher rates of stomach and colon cancer here vs their home countries. Fresh caught fish ftmfw.

I don't understand how the prepackaged lunch meats that comes in the plastic tubs over by the hot dogs and cold pickles can be good for up to 2 months but the stuff at the deli counter goes bad in 4 days..

I don't like the pre packaged stuff, but the stuff from the deli counter is tasty.

This.

The good, basic stuff from a deli is not as bad as you think. Things like turkey & roast beef are usually free of added sodium and nitrites. Bologna, salami, etc are trouble no matter what.

My g/f & I usually do what you suggest - we cook the meat, then slice for sammidges. Fresher, safer, more economical.

that stuff is actually mediocre, just a step above lunch meat.
idk, I haven't tasted a better brand of buffalo chicken than Boar's Head.

for generic stuff like turkey or ham, I don't really have any strong preferences and tend to go with whatever's on sale (typically black bear or D&W)
