Anybody else afflicted by motion sickness from FPSs but oddly not when playing Multi-Player FPSs?

i was googling this issue about an hour ago. i'm unable to play HL2 for more than 30 minutes without getting sick. apparently the "default fov" is set to 75. increasing it to 90 supposedly fixes the problem. CS source is set to 90 by default ergo the ability to play without getting queasy.

default fov? Field of Vision? interesting... How do I set this in HL2? Is there a console?

I don't think that's my problem... I ran the source engine test in CS:Source and IIRC I got like 70 fps.

A64 3000+, X800 Pro, 1gb ram and I play at 1024x768, I'm pretty sure i'm getting decent framerates.

I have a friend that was like that in UT. He turned off the head-bob option and he's been doing fine with UT2k4.

Maybe because in multiplayer I'm not looking around admiring the scenery? And I don't recall having this problem back in the good ole days (Wolf, Doom, Quake 1, even Descent).

that's me. :(

Single player FPS = dizzy.
Multiplayer FPS = no dizzy.

I can play hours and hours of CS but only 15 mins of HL2 before I get dizzy (same monitor/size).
Yes, the monitor size does has something to do with it. The larger the monitor, the faster I get dizzy, but only affects single player.

it seems that quite a few of us have this same problem :(

I have this problem as well in HL2. Not at all in CS though. This is getting interesting. I have never puked because of it although I was very close.

Bumping an old thread.

I've never gotten motion sickness before until I started playing HL2.

I used to play UT for hours on end without any problems but HL2 kills me after 15 mins.

The resolution and refresh rate I play at are the same (1280x1024 100Hz) but for some reason HL2 makes me nauseous.

Any clues why?

I was going to start this thread if I didn't find it. I get sick to my stomach too, after about 20 - 30 minutes.

HL2 "feels" to me like my eyes/brain are having to "work hard" to make me believe it really is a 3D world, whereas other game engines like Battlefield just appear 3D with no perceptable effort. This especially apparent in HL2 when I am looking at an object up close like the air boat, rather than the distant sections of the map. It seems like the closer objects are kind of "painted on" the scene and don't appear 3D unless I convince myself they are.

I had noticed that when you look slowly from side to side there is sort of a "fish-eye" lens effect at the edges of the screen and I thought maybe there was a rendering decision they made that caused it.
I'm glad to see the post by "doctor" y2kc about FOV. I will try that.

I change the FOV in Battlefield to push my view back from the gun, otherwise I feel like I'm too close, but I hadn't thought of trying it in HL2.

THANKS to y2kc for doing the google research.

By the way, a lot of monitors have a status display you can call up in their menus to verify for absolutely certain what refresh rate is being sent to the monitor, so you can be confident that your refresh rate override is working.

 I just thought of something, when you give yourself a greater FOV angle, you "see" more and get a corresponding drop in frame rate (in battlefield). Since HL2 is kind of tough for a lot of systems to handle, they may have decided to lower the FOV to give people a frame-rate boost.
I wonder if it only happens on lower to middle-end systems when the game detects your system and sets the defaults. Maybe it sets the FOV to a larger angle when it detects a more powerful system and a smaller angle with a lower-end system?

Anyone ever find out how to check / change it?

For me, I get motion sickness in Halo 2 whether it's SP or MP. I also get it in UT2k4 SP for PC, but am perfectly fine in MP. I don't really know what it is... I don't think the FOV in UT2k4 MP is different than SP.

Same thing happens to me when I play Doom 3, but not as much as before. I would get it all the time with Quake and Duke Nukem. No problem with UT2k4, though.

I have no clue to how the motion sickness thing works like in a car. I have heard of for a car but not for a game, is it something to do with the mind getting confused?

Well, shoot that theory down.:frown:

They are wrong.
I've changed the FOV to 90 and it is noticeably better.
I can play for about 45 minutes straight now whereas before was only 15 minutes.

Console command is:
sv_cheats 1
default_fov 90

Now the trick is getting it to stick.
I've created an autoexec.cfg file in the cfg folder with those two commands and set the file to read only.

Edit: typos

ditto

i get motion sickness easily from single player but almost never in multiplayer even if i play straight for 10+ hours. though it seems that background music in single-player greatly reduces the occurance of motion sickness.

maybe it's the way the mind is focused differently.

I found a great HL2 tweakguide with plenty of info regarding how to setup autoexec.cfg and all the other ways to setup console commands.

http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_1.html

Hey psteng19, you mean default_ fov 90
and
sv_cheats 1
I presume.

Thanks for mentioning the sv_cheats 1, I was wondering why my settings didn't work.

It seems like I have to set "fov" rather than "default_fov" to get it to stay while ingame, haven't tried the autoexec.cfg yet.
