i've used benchmade knives for the past couple years. after i got my first axis lock i can't go back to anything else. the griptillian series is just sweet. and i always hated anything with a liner lock.

I've carried a pocketknife since I was 12. Worked part-time in a knife shop all throughout college too. I seem to go with either Cold Steel or Benchmade. Spydercos always seem to break on me as their tips are just lame, although when it comes to one-hand opening, nothing beats their circle.

So far AUS10 is the most impressive steel I've come across. ATS-34 is junk and highly overrated. Cold Steel's proprietary Carbon 5 recipe is fantastic stuff, albeit vunerable to corrosion.

Not really useful in a life or death situation, as it's fairly stiff, but I don't encounter many "hoods" in my neck of the woods..

i got the wave too. AWESOME tool / knife tho.

i got mine like 4 years ago.

costco, though. (rossman would be proud). 😛

i have a few pocket knives that i got from something like qvc about 5 years ago. came out to about $12 a piece for them, but every single on of them is still sharp and in decent condition considering the wear ive given them. i always have a knife, a leatherman micra, or a schrade pocket tool on me. love that thing.

schrade isnt bad, gerber and leatherman are tops, buck makes the absolute worst multi-tool i've ever seen.

but i love their fixed blades and locking blades.

i have a tiny little Gerber knife that i keep on my keychain. its got about a 1 inch blade on it. Good for stuff like opening packages etc....

my brother has that one, nice little knife, but i prefer one with a clip (for belt/pcoket for quick access) a thumb button and a liner lock.

something similar in make to these or these

cheap and durable. i put a fair amount of abuse on those little cheap folders; i dont have to worry if they break because theyre cheap...but they have yet to break, despite being bashed, dropped and pried with.

edit: looked at microtech knives, i dont think i could spend that much on a knife and use it. looks to be very nice and great quality...but id be too worried about breaking it myself. the QD scarab looks nice, but $600? warranty or not, id rather have a handful of cheap good knives around if one breaks, than one that could cover my mortgage AND electricity for the month....thats incredible.

ok, i figured the KISS delilah peck was too small and useless, so im going to academy sports later today and picking up a Gershaw Chive... good size, good looks 😀

i have the not-much-of-a-knife basic swiss army knife with x < 10 functions (my first real pocket knife, so i guess it just looks nice on my keychain).

i just got this for my birthday. it's pretty nice - sharp, small, and tough (titanium).

and i have a spyderco delica imitation - it works well and is pretty good considering that i got it for free. 😀 now i need to get a real one.

i'm thinking as soon as i get the next paycheck i'll be spending it on a leatherman wave, woot! or maybe a real spyderco knife - we'll see.

and the i have those many-function pocket knives that have the standard two blades, scissors, misc. screwdrivers, corkscrews, and the works. they don't really fit in my pocket though.

but that's enough of my rambling.

I typically carry a larger, single bladed knife. Truth be told, you probably don't need something really hard core. You can look for the best steel or whatever, but I would look for something that it relatively cheap and comfortable. I've carried a CRKT M16-03 for about a year, then I carried a Kershaw Whirlwind. Now I carry a $3 locking, folding knife I bought as a part of a box set from the home shopping network. I still have my good knives, but I've gotten to the point where I hate to use them for every day tasks. I have cheap knives for that...

All that being said, I look for a good sized, comfortable knife. There is nothing more dangerous than trying to do work with a knife you aren't comfortable with. The other two things I look for are a thumb stud (and/or a flip stud on the back of the knife) and a liner lock. Traditional lock backs must be opened and closed with two hands. Well, sometimes I don't have a free hand to open and close a knife with, so I like a knife that I can comfortably open and close with one hand.

Good luck with your search. My last recommendation is to look for a good sharpening system. The Lansky system is great for keeping blades sharp. Better knives (better steel) will keep a sharp edge longer and will be more durable, but I can go through a lot of cheap knives for the same price as a really expensive knife, and I don't have to worry about losing them.

The one thing I love about the Kershaw I mentioned is that it has a spring assisted opening system. It is sweet...
