Anybody been to Mackinac Island recently?

Any hotel suggestions? I am looking for really nice accommodations and some highlights of your trip if possible.

It's been about 20 years since I have been there -

Eh, it's weak. Everything is expensive but I guess a lot of city people on here are used to that.

Did you want a hotel on the island? I think there is only that big fancy one actually on the island. But there are a bunch of different regular motels in the towns on either side of the bridge.

The most fun thing to do there is rent a bike and go biking IMO. Not really a whole lot to do there unless you like going in shops to buy expensive junk.

You can stay in much better hotels for less money off the island next to the ferry in Mackinaw City. I've stayed at the Grand Hotel and, IMHO, it was not worth the price.

that's pretty much what everybody says - I've never stayed on the island. I knew a guy who handled phones at the grand for a summer...that seemed like quite the spiffy summer job - I think he got room and (some) board included.

but really, unless you're into the tourist spot thing...alot of the other islands in northern michigan are more fun for days out or camping. isle royale, beaver island, manitou...

power island is great for a quick day out, and near traverse city if you must be near civilization (I think you need your own boat though...)

Thanks for the input! Any suggestions for a place off the island in Mackinac city? I too was wondering if the Grand Hotel was worth the $499/night.

there are nicer places in the U.P. than mackinaw. Remember to get your Burger at Clyde's! If you don't, you deserve to die.

EDIT: Thats MHO, anyways. You don't go to the U.P. to stay in hotels and go to the city. You go up there to see the country and crap like that. We have a cottage in Curtis, right in the middle of Fvcking no where, in the U.P. Its fun to go up there for a couple of weeks in the summer, get away from the smog and cities and crap.

aside from a few emergency vehicles, nope. the island's pretty small, you can bike the whole thing fairly quickly.
