So I live in So Cal (first part of the problem) and used to always do Mervyn's & Target for the quickie little holiday stuff. (Valentine's, St. Patrick's, etc.) Buy the wife a blouse/lingerie/whatever at Mervyn's, then run next door to Target & get the card/candy/wrappings there.

Well, I hadn't been in a Mervyn's in at least a year (maybe more) and I literally felt like I stepped into MEXICO!!!!!!!

Since the Kohl's invasion...Mervyn's has definitely taken a turn for the worse!

-Store seemed almost like it was abandoned (definitely weak traffic)
-Dimly lit (especially compared to Kohl's stores)
-Every other customer speaking spanish (this annoyed me and I can *speak* spanish)
-and worst of all......

In between the 70's top-40 music.......EVERY SINGLE ADVERTISEMENT OVER THE SOUND SYSTEM WAS IN S-P-A-N-I-S-H!!!!!! I mean not ONE english advertisement!!

WTF????????? :|

(Yes, Mervyn's corporate is gonna get an earful from me for whorin' out)

why do you care what language the *customers* speak. do you go there to troll for dates or something?

advertisements in spanish i can see as something you *could* complain about... i mean, if you actually care about that kind of thing.

I tune out all adverts, so being in a foreign language just makes it that much easier for me.

be prepared for the "English is not the official language of the united states" crowd to flame you.

You beat me to it.
Who gives a f*ck what language other customers in the store speak? I only care if the people working there speak English.

so the only legit complaint you have is that the in-store ads were in Spanish?

If the clients are predominantly Hispanic then shouldn't the ads be geared towards them?

you could move to the Northern regions of the midwest if your xenophobia gets to you. that should work for a few months.

edit: that's what you get for trying to buy Lingerie from a store like Kohl's

Did Kohl's buy Mervyn's or something? Kohl's here aren't too bad; a little unorganized, but otherwise nice.

Like many chain stores, the quality seems to greatly depend on the area its located. Did you go to the Mervyn's in Puente Hills or Montebello? ;)

The one in Lakewood was a total disaster when shopping there during Christmas (right down to the unbearably long lines, the very few employees who were too swamped to provide any service, merchandise scattered all over the place), while the Cerritos store always maintains some semblance of an honest-to-goodness, genuine department store.

Never heard any Spanish language advertisements or music in either of the stores in Lakewood or Cerritos. Now Puente Hills, or Montebello on the other hand... no surprise there. :D

I've noticed the quality of Mervyn's stores going down the last couple years. Seems to be turning into a department store version of K-Mart. I tend to avoid that place as much as possible...as they don't carry anything i can't get for the same price elsewhere.

I was in Target a while back, and all of their hanging signs that tell you what department you are in have both English and Spanish on them, in same sized lettering. I suspect that in 20 years or less, the southwest US will be part of Mexico... :(

heh
The grocery store near me has tons and tons of spanish items.
If you walk up and down the isles lots of the english labeled things like cereal and can foods have been replaced with spanish labled ones.
Its annoying because I don't read spanish.

I live in NC, near a rural area where there are probably more latin people than USA born people. They work the farms mainly. They had an illegal person round up last week, nabbed 140 or so.

Oddly the ones I talk to aren't from mexico. Most are from honduras.

I wonder how many Target/Mervyn's combination strip malls there are...
when I lived in Cali I went to the one on Midway Drive in San Diego - what a craphole! but the Target was nice.

Whites will be a minority in the US soon. It is not if, but when (exact date)...some says within 50 years or less.

So which one is it?

There is no official language in the USofA. English is the default/unofficial language.
