Anybody able to get Gothic 4 running reasonably well?

I picked this up because I read the combat had been overhauled, which was the one reason I was never able to get into the previous games in the series. I had played the demo and even though it ran like complete crap I still bought it because of patches that supposedly fixed the performance issues. That was a lie. The full game runs just as terribly as the demo, if not more so.

I know my PC is edging towards below mid-range, but I've had no trouble with other games. I can play Two Worlds 2, which looks much better than Gothic 4, at max with vsync at a constant 60 FPS - it's never dropped even in the most crowded cities or hectic combat with dozens of spells flying. Gothic 4, however, can't seem to get above 15 FPS just walking down a path with nothing around. And that's with SSAO off and all shadows on low. Strangely, switching between 1920x1080 and 1280x720 has no impact on performance.

So any ideas? Is the game just unplayable on my hardware? Did I miss a patch somewhere? The game is patched to 1.2.

The demo ran fine for me, and I'm just on a Q6600 and GTX285. I believe I had everything maxed but shadows and maybe something else turned to medium or low (ssao maybe?). I don't really remember all the details though, because as a Gothic fan, I found it to be one of the worst sequels released ever, for anything.

Runs fine for me and the game was ok, but Two Worlds 2 is by far the better of the two games.

Runs fine for me too. It's incredibly boring though. I can't believe I bought it (I really liked the 3rd one). Two Worlds 2 also sucks. Sooo scripted/boring/repetitive/unoriginal

Nope- just a very poorly done engine. In the open areas, I'd get about 30fps, but anytime I was near or inside a building - it would drop to about 10-15 fps - Q8300 & HD4870 1gb.

I managed to finish the game and became very annoyed with the sheer amount of combat near the last part of the game.

Honestly - the entire game felt like an unfinished product...

What drivers are you currently using? And trust me, your PC is not edging towards below mid-range. It's still upper tier.

Gothic 3 is almost finished.

The 1.74 patch is pretty close.

So give Gothic 4 another 5 or so years.

Well yeah, if you play TW2 as a "me barsh things wid sword blargh" vanilla warrior type it is pretty boring. As a mage, though, it's awesome. The spell crafting system is probably the best ever created.

And from the replies here and my searching, unoptimized engine and/or rushed PC port seems to be the answer.

Unless they release a patch that completely revamps the game I dont see it ever being good.

At least with Gothic 3 there was a good game under a layer of lousy bugs, so once they worked out the bugs it was fun.

Gothic 4 is some BS adventure game on rails. Its a completely different game from the rest of the Gothic series. Gone are all the fundamental elements which made Gothic games fun such as open ended world, interesting/realistic NPCs (for example gathering around a campfire at night to play songs, smoke swamp weed and chat) and more mature content.

As for OP I had no problems running the game with even my old PC which was Core 2 duo with a nVidia 8600.

While I commend the community for their efforts and applaud them, Gothic 3 can hardly be called finished.

Still waiting on the community patch for Forsaken Gods. Picked that up for 99 cents from GoGamer a while back.

If you want Gothic 3 to be perfect you'll be waiting for a long time.

It is what it is - a flawed gem. And it will always be that. The scope they attempted was just too expansive.

But it's also pretty damn good now.

G3 with community patches is finished more or less,Forsaken Gods is a whole different game and yes thats far from finished.

Gothic 4 I'm sad to say from playing the demo is nothing really like the previous Gothic games, dumbed down missing the sparkle and the Gothic feel, ironically Two Worlds 2 is closer to G3 then G4.

Yes Two worlds 2 is far the better game IMHO.

Thanks for cluing me in. Was debating whether to jump in or not, now I know.

To each their own. I'm playing TW2 as a pure warrior and love it. THe crafting system is great and there's tons of loot.

TW2 is a superior game to Gothic 4 in every way, so if you're playing TW2 then Gothic 4 is a step back.

I wasn't bashing warriors. I played one first like I always do in new RPGs just to get a feel for the mechanics, but by chapter 3 I was so tired of hitting 3 for block breaker, then 2 for radial barrage I couldn't take it anymore. Not to mention that even on hard you're basically invincible while in defensive mode. Mages are much harder and I like that I have to plan spells and strategize for most fights.

Anyway, I'm done with Gothic 4. I really only got it to fill the void after TW2, but I think I'll give Risen another shot instead. I used to hate Euro RPGs because they're so buggy and the writing so hilariously stilted, but now I kind of like them. The translations are still awful and the voice acting can be terrible, but the developers seem to have at least a spark of inspiration and passion.

This is about the performance i've experienced in the game as well. It typically doesn't drop below 20 fps for me, but usually hovers around 30 for most areas. I'm running everything maxed out except for shadows, but honestly, changing video settings didn't seem to do anything at all when I was trying to optimize the game. Lowing the resolution was the only thing that made any change it seemed. I have my resolution set at 1280x960 right now.

I'm running a i5 760 quad @ 4ghz with a Geforce GTS450, 8 gigs of ram, so my system should be more than capable of running this game maxed out at a decent frame rate. Sadly, it's just an unoptimized mess at this point. I've been enjoying the game for what it's worth but it's no Gothic 3 by any stretch of the imagination.
