any WRX owerns (current and ex) think their insurance are high

Anything with the word TURBO is going to cost you more to insure. Especially since that is a tuner car and very popular with the street racing crowd so it is more of a liability to insure due to theft, racing, etc.

WRX's are known to have high insurance rates like Civic Si's are known for them as well. It's just how the car is. If it's stolen alot the insurance is high. If more younger kids drive it then it's going to be high. Commong sense.

i thought when i wrote $xxx/ 6 months it was a little clear.

the numbers i posted were per every 6 months. not a monthly rate. no way am i going to pay $500 a month for a car.

these rates are just about equal in terms of state farm and geico quotes i got. Its a lot harder to get quotes since i'm on my parents policy. I'm using them as much as i can as they save me a TON of money.

I really like the WRX, and yes i understand its a hot car with young adults and teens. High crash rate, high vandal rate but wow, we are talking double my g35x. I have a really strong liking for the WRX. the price of the car is right for me. The power level +5 speed suits my needs very much. But these rates are just simply insane.

I guess its just not in the cards for me. I dont understand why the legacy GT is so cheap. its the same car pretty much. putting out 250hp/250tq or something compared to the WRX 225/225. nearly same AWD platform. a little more luxury touch. LGT retails a more.

LGT is less 'boy racer' and more of a mainstream mid size(although on the small side) car, and thus gets lower insurance rates. Most that own them are middle class adults.

I own a 2005 WRX and my insurance costs 2400 a year. Thankfully I do not pay for that.

However being that I own a WRX I suggest you just get the LGT. It's more comfortable, looks nicer, costs less, and in most regards better platform than the WRX.

better platform i'm not sure on that...

a sleeperish car yes, they have less options when it comes to turbo upgrades, unless i rotate it around. looking at it if the wrx has 5 aftermarket options the LGT will have 1-2 options. couple of minor issues, like the radio and HVAC is one unit on the LGT which means no simple stereo upgrade. i somewhat like the newer hatches compared to the LGT wagon. internally i think its the same block but a diffrent turbo i think a VF39, i've thought about a LGT for a while.

Edit - Sorry, had to do it. 😀

I don't really think those rates are too bad... but what is the coverage? You say $250 deduct in the first post... I'm assuming that's for both collision and comprehensive?

I pay almost exactly 1300/year for my 08' EvoX. I would assume that a new STI would be around the same price. I'm 24 w/ 1 ticket (10 over) on my driving record. I have a 250 deduct for comprehensive and a 500 ded for collision. I'm insured with Erie insurance... $168/year extra for "curb weight to horsepower ratio."

I really have to start shopping around... I origionally went with Erie because that's who my parents were insured with.... I should also note that my rate just recently went down as I turn 25 this year....

I pay $1200 every 6 months for an 08 Mazda 3s with State Farm (I'm also in the Chicago area, no accidents on my record). Drivers in the house are 16, 22, 23 (me), 45, 49, and 74. This is with Home\Auto discount. I don't think you're getting hosed at all. The worst part is the 16 year old just added another $100 to my insurance, and he'll NEVER touch my car.

Also quoted (from years and years ago) about twice as much as a camry, 20% more than a 240SX, and 20% less than a '94 300ZX TT.

LOL at this and everyone bitching about insurance rates. I'm in BC where we only have a government insurance agency. No competition.

I'm 26 with a clean record (9 years) and 40% deduction. I drive an old-ass 92 Accord, and I pay $1200 per year. My brother, with an 02 Civic Si, pays $2200 per year. I don't even want to think about how much a WRX would cost for insurance.

Be grateful you can shop around.

WRX is a boy-racer car, your findings don't surprise me in the least. WHat's next, complaining about insurance rates for an SRT4? 🙂

Yeah I feel your pain dude, but it comes with the territory. I have an 07 subbie N/A..I am 21 years old under my moms insurance. I pay like $350 every 6 mo. so I am pretty lucky. I am going to be boned harder than Eva Angelina when I move out of my house next year...I plan on buying a WRX or an STi.. well lets just say I am heavily reconsidering.

I honestly expected a increase, but going from $350 to a $560 is a HUGE difference. And this is under my parents policy, which means its lower rates to begin with. I was assuming maybe $450 tops, since looking at HP, drivetrain and cost of car its about even or higher on my g35 side. The g35c has started to become the boy-racer type of a car now since the prices have lowered. Yea its not comparing apples to apples.

It is what it is i guess. no more bitching, i'll see if a can handle the $560 per month for a car that i really want or not.

lol well I pay 1600/yr for my SRT-4 and compared to other with the same car in my area with full coverage I'm getting a decent deal. Scoobies/evo's would have been infinitely more expensive for insurance around here.

You are whining about $93 a month insurance on a relatively sporty 2005 car at 23?

:Q

People not much younger than you would be paying $200-300 a month for something like a GTO.

But not under their parents policys. that is the key thing. I know if was going to insure a WRX by myself alone it will easily be $1500/ 6months compared to my parent's policy quote of $560.

$560 was the price i expected for a EVO/ STI
$350-450 was the price i expected for a WRX
$350 is what i pay for the g35 now.

those were the rates i expected, if i had gotten that i wouldn't really care. I'm going to get a quote for the STI to see how much of a diffrence it makes.

Part of it might be the mod-ability of the cars in question.

A G35 + $500 gets you nothing, +$2000 might get you what? like 3% performance gain?
A WRX + $500 gets you ~15% performance gains, +$2000 gets you ~25% performance gains

Insurers aren't dumb. They know kids like to pimp their rides. They aren't worried about insuring bone-stock WRX's, it's the modded cars that can get inexperienced drivers in trouble fast that shift the tables up.

What? I have friends in BC and their insurance is stupidly cheap. I thought it was fairly well documented Ontario insurance rates were balls.... I have an '88 Toyota Camry, only covered for liability, 150/month. I wont tell you what my STI costs because both you and I will throw up.

10-Most Expensive Cars to Insure

WRX is #2 on the list.

What's with all the econoboxes on that list??

4. Lancer, 8. Forenza, 9. Sentra, 10. Cobalt???

?? It only makes sense... High collision rates from inexperienced drivers that typically purchase economy vehicles. High theft - If you're going to steal a car to commit a crime, you want something that will not stand out. High cost of accidents - repairing the car is the cheap part, economy vehicles tend to not do so well against merc's or higher end land yachts, so the drivers are more likely to require significant medical treatment.

Thank god I have an SRT-4 engine in an old man's car. My PT Cruiser GT insurance was $140/mo when I first got it new in '03 (I was 23). It eventually went down to $110/mo after I turned 25. Now that it is my weekender car (short mileage) it, together with my daily driver 94 Saturn SL2 POS the insurance is $80/mo.

Theft is also a concern.

The WRX is a higher profile car so people are more likely to do a steal/strip/torch job on it compared to the other cars. The Ford 500 is cheap because lets face it, there's almost zero market for stripped parts.

not just theft, theres also his age in regards to the statistical info for that car. arent the wrx one of the most modded street cars? mebbe there is tons of data making that car for his age a statistical albatross to insure. when the odds go up that youll wreck it or it will get stolen, the premiums go up. seems pretty clear to me.

makes a huge difference. hell, i still have my ex on my policy for now since my agent told me my premium will go up when im single.

Yea, I don't need to hear about the STI for sure lol.

Where in BC are your friends though? If you're anywhere outside of Metro Vancouver or Victoria, sure it's cheap. A buddy of mine grew up in Lillooet (small town in the interior) and his insurance cost 1/3 what it did in Vancouver.

I'm in Metro Vancouver, covered for basic, extended 3rd party liability (to $2 mil) and windshield/glass. Well, at least I don't live in Surrey .

I've heard that Ontario rates are high relative to most of Canada, but I always figured that since you have multiple private insurance companies, competition would make the rates lower.

Well my brother has persuaded me to buy a '07 Mitsubishi Evo 9 FQ360 at the end of this year to replace my '05 WRX with PPP. The insurance premium is exactly the same with a much lower excess. Amazing considering the FQ has 100BHP more power than the WRX; it is quicker (0-60MPH is 3.9 seconds); and has a top end of 157MPH (limited).

Who's your insurance company? Does MN just have high insurance rates or what? My wife and I are 34 with clean driving records and I wanna say we pay $350/6mos on a PT Cruiser through State Farm. And if I recall we have a $500 deductible, and also a multi-line discount by having my motorcycle plus home owners and life insurance with them as well.
