Ps4 by a mile. Anyone who tells you the ps4 is silent is a liar. Especially after a gaming session it is quite noticeably loud and hot. The x1 is a silent whirring noise no matter what you do. I've yet to even hear it spin up beyond the normal levels.

I've played games on my PS4 for over 6 hours at a time and I could not hear it when I put my receiver on mute to take a break.

I'm sure everyone walks over and stands there measuring the temp too because it's got smoke billowing out of it. My PS4 measures lower temps than my PC.

As an owner of both.

The PS4 is the louder unit. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to leave the PS4 on for updates originally (forgetting that it downloaded updates during sleep). Since I have both of them in my bedroom and I have gotten more sensitive to noise I was surprised to hear the fan on the PS4 after I sent it to the home screen and shut everything else off. After that I decided to run a test after I got my Xbone and went to Vudu and play 2001 SO. Since that has several points where it was completely devoid of audio. The PS4 fan was clear to hear. The Xbox fan even when playing games I can't confirm I have ever heard it. But it was silent during streaming playback.

That said the PS4 fan is best described as a bit loud laptop fan. It's probably only audible for the first couple feet in most houses and isn't very intrusive in all but the most silent situations. But as a downside. Do to the setup for the fan and it's enclosure air will not move over naturally which means it has to run whenever the system is on so even on the home screen.

The Xbox hsf setup is crude and and enormous and very open. It has the potential in high temp situations to completely dwarf the PS4 in noise levels. But the plus side is that it seems to allow for higher heat tolerances and has a fan profile seems to support a no spin solution for most tasks because of the size and openness of the heat sink. Because of it's size even if it is spinning (since you can feel some air pressure out the back on occasion) it's at such a low RPM it's nearly inaudible.

Just looking at the hardware, I would guess the xbone would be the quieter of the two.

as I prefer the ps4, i hate to say, its louder then the Bone, but its sorta like getting slapped 99 times or 100.. one is more then the other, but in the end, its still about the same. PS4 make more noise, but its hardly "noise". Considering almost all the game devs say its more powerful, I can live with it. opps, this was about stuff that dont matter to game play, not stuff that does, yep PS4 is slightly louder. :)

My PS4 is in my bedroom sitting on top of a dresser next to the TV ... the fan is at least twice as loud as the XB1 on the other side of the wall, which is sitting on top of a shelf in a very similar position next to another TV.

If I walk up to the XB1 I can hear it while a game is playing, but it's what I would call 'considerably' quieter. I have a fat launch PS3 in the same room as the PS4 and it's the loudest of the three, but the PS4 isn't far behind it to be honest.

I'm not complaining; the PS4 has a built-in power supply and is blowing warm air out the back; in chassis that size there is no way you're going to have silence under load. The XB1 has a much larger fan and a bigger chassis, plus it isn't dealing with an internal PSU.

do you guys play video games with your tv on mute in your newborns bedroom while he/she is sleeping? i've never heard more people concerned with the sound of a console than i've seen on this forum.

If you want to watch movies or leave it on overnight, it's pretty annoying to be able to hear the console clearly. There's a lot of reasons why people want/like silent things, consoles or desktops or laptops. It's just better not to have noise if you can help it.

I put in 2k14 and pause the game at the player upgrade menu. Got a phone call that lasted about half an hour. I didn't hear the ps4 at all and I am by myself in the apartment.

Sometimes I hear it loading up in AC or BF4 but I never have to stop and worry that it's so loud it is interrupting my gaming. My pc is way way louder and I rarely complain when I play games on that.

You'd be surprised how much noise a console can make in a silent room at night; in my case it's not a problem of waking someone up, it's just the fact that it's making noise period haha. I went out of my way with my PC to make sure it was as quiet as possible; I just hate noisy electronics.

I've seen people build really awesome custom cases for their 360s and PS3s, with great quiet/silent cooling jobs. I wish some mainstream company would get in on the act and release aftermarket PS4 / XB1 cases. It would be awesome to have a Receiver-sized case that would hold the guts of both a PS4 and XB1, and also have room for a couple SATA hard drives that had internal USB connection to the systems as well. Total one-box solution with 3TB external drives for each system, and silent. And then have a smaller box that is a combo PS3/360 as well. All 4 systems, minimal space.

As the owner of both, the PS4 is the louder of the two, but not really noticeable from a distance.

The XBox One has the obvious advantage of being physically larger, and having a larger heatsink/cooling fan solution

I have not heard my PS4 at all, but it does get quite warm. When I am near my cabinet after having the PS4 running for a while, I can definitely feel some heat coming off the thing.

Yes it does but thankfully it doesn't made the plastic popping noises that the PS3 Slim does when heating up and cooling down.
