There are a lot of idiots who actually believe in that nonsense. Besides, you may not have the two seconds to load the weapon. The very least you can do is get a shotgun with a bayonet lug and keep one attached to it.
I have probably forgotten more about firearms than you will ever know, so try not to patronize me.

I know the magazine is loaded, but not having one in the chamber is what I am talking about.
If there truly is someone in your home, and they make their way to wherever you are, racking the shotgun in the hopes that it will scare them away is very foolish. Your best bet, if you do not want to keep one in the chamber, is to load one in the second you suspect there is someone in the house, not when you are an earshot away.

People with his mentality have it because they are uneducated about firearms and they fear them.
One of his previous posts claimed the safest world is one without weapons, but what he doesn't understand due to his lack of understanding is that anything can be a weapon. I can pick up this keyboard and smash it over your head.
I'll give him some lead-way since he's a Brit and they outlawed guns once they got their asses kicked by a group of gun loving people in the New World.

I have a Springfield 1911 GI on the night stand with 7RNDS Speer Gold Dot in the mag and 1 in the pipe, 12G pump action shotgun under the bed, and an AK47 clone under the bed with red dot scope, 2-30rnd mags strapped together for quicker reload (this is for the zombie invasion only).
Shotgun has been pulled once on an intruder and the racking of the slid was enough to make the intruder turn tail and run.

I have little kids, so no guns.
I have a baseball bat under the bed. Four years of varsity baseball followed by many more years of softball has turned that into a deadly weapon. I also have some knives in a high drawer nearby, but I do not plan on getting into any hand-to-hand combat. Just a whack to the knees, then the head, then the finisher that the cleaning girls have to take care of after the coroner leaves.
I am a big believer in the rule that if you break into my house, you have committed a Capital Offense, and I am the judge, jury and executioner. There will be no Jason moments when I am done.
Either that or I will whimper in the corner and soil myself. 😉

Well it's true, and if you know the history of weapons and firearms, you would know that the sword was invented for 1 reason and 1 reason only. To kill other people in combat, Atheus claims that he will best someone with a firearm with his katana (most likely a cheap piece of crap from ebay that is made from cheap steel and not full tang).

Actually I've fired quite a few rifles and shotguns - I grew up in a town surrounded by rural areas and there was plenty of them around. Good fun. I do not fear guns, but I fear for the safety of my family around violent people, especially if they have guns.
I hold the opinion that I do because it seems obvious to me - why does any person need the ability to kill dozens of others with little more than a thought? Where would you draw the line in your 'perfect world' - should everyone have nuclear weapons? No? Then where?
And then I would punch you in the face, and you would punch me back, and etc etc, and nobody dies. I'll take that over being shot any day.
I think you mean leaway. And guns are not banned here, only handguns and automatic weapons, so you can still get a hunting rifle or keep a shotgun in the house. And Britain did not ban anything after the American war of indpendence, at that time Britain was still by far the most powerful millitary force the world had ever seen - that war was just one of a hundred little colonial wars to them.

If I am startled in the middle of the night by an intruder in my home, I am going to keep swinging until I believe the threat has been neutralized. Am I suppose to check on the intruder between swings to see if he is still a threat?
On what grounds would I be charged?

Actually I got it from Singapore, of all places - it's one of those mass produced WWII ones which had somehow found it's way there from Japan.
Look I have nothing against keeping one weapon, gun or sword, so long as it's secure and so long as you don't carry the damn thing round on the street. It's these people with huge arsenals who seem to think they are a one man army against the world - they're the ones that disturb me.
