not really

some entertainment systems can do an auto-pan-scan, but most dont...

pan-scan = anamorphic to 4x3 by cutting out some of the left\right sides

Many DVD players have a zoom option which will take a 4:3 chunk out of the middle of the image and display that full screen.

It is not, however, intelligent. If crucial action is to the left or right of that zoomed area you'll miss it.

To be more accurate...

ratio != OAR...ick

I'm all for full screen if it was originally shot that way, but if it was shot in anything other than 4:3 I better see some black bars on my Wega.

Watching any movie in an aspect ratio different than the director originally intended sucks. You miss a lot. Turn off the lights and enjoy your movie. You'll quickly forget about the "annoying" black bars as soon as you're into the movie.

Where's that web-site where the guy took screen shots comparing wide screen and 4:3 pan and scam scenes?
