I need to reimburse my roommate for utilities each month, is there a better way of doing this than writing a check each month? Any way to transfer money for free? I think my bank may charge for a transfer since the account to transfer to is not the same brand bank.

My Capital One checking account let me do up to 6 transfers to other checking accounts within the US for free per month.

"Better" for who? Writing a check should be pretty easy for you (unless you're lazy beyond anything previously known to mankind). It's only a bit of work for him, and that would be assuming that he never deposits any other checks during the month.

ACH transfers are free in/out with my TD Ameritrade investment account.

Not 100% electronic, but I've used the online billpay feature to send someone else a paper check. No cost for that, at least through my bank.
They reserve the fees for other things.
- Viewing the image of a check you wrote someone: Free.
- Viewing the image of a deposit slip: $x.xx ($1.50 or $2.00, something like that. I don't remember exactly. I can only assume that they store them on the server as uncompressed 32-bit 16,000dpi TIFFs, and only down-convert them to low-res 1-bit images for viewing.🙄)
- Notification of the cost of doing this: Buried somewhere in the fine print; there's no notification before you click. I'm glad I only did it once, and for a single deposit slip.

Back in the day we would take cash out of our wallets hand it to another person.

That's not a thing anymore?
Physical material? As in, there are protons and neutrons along with this electron-backed currency? A fascinating concept.

(But of course, cash isn't free either. Employees of the US Mint and armored transport services do not work for free.)

I can do it but I charge 8% interest. I also do loans. No credit check required. 😀 I'm honest and trustworthy.

PayPal, but now the fuckers charge a fee if the money comes from a bank account or debt card. Free if the money is in your PayPal account though.
