Not 100% electronic, but I've used the online billpay feature to send someone else a paper check. No cost for that, at least through my bank.
They reserve the fees for other things.
- Viewing the image of a check you wrote someone: Free.
- Viewing the image of a deposit slip: $x.xx ($1.50 or $2.00, something like that. I don't remember exactly. I can only assume that they store them on the server as uncompressed 32-bit 16,000dpi TIFFs, and only down-convert them to low-res 1-bit images for viewing.
🙄)
- Notification of the cost of doing this: Buried somewhere in the fine print; there's no notification before you click. I'm glad I only did it once, and for a single deposit slip.
Back in the day we would take cash out of our wallets hand it to another person.
That's not a thing anymore?
Physical material? As in, there are protons and neutrons along with this electron-backed currency? A fascinating concept.
(But of course, cash isn't
free either. Employees of the US Mint and armored transport services do not work for free.)
