I want to set up some sort of automated sync for my flash drive, mainly because I use it to transport schoolwork with it, but also use it at work. I just want to make it so that whenever I plug the drive into my computer, it syncs a folder on the drive with a folder on my HD.

how can this be done? is there some third party app for it, some hidden thing in windows that needs to be activated, or is the only way to manually copy the new files over??

The windows breifcase might work for you as it can be used to sync files with your desktop and a floppy, so why not a USB key. Right-click the Desktop and choose "New", "Briefcase". Double-click it and read what it does and decide if it works for you.

There are plenty of sync tools out there. Just google for file sync tool.

If you read a bit further down the page on the link provided above, you'll find this whitepaper mentioned under "Related Resources".

I believe the SyncToy executable gets installed under its own directory in the Microsoft folder under "Program Files".
