So heres the deal with my phone. If i leave it in a spot and dont touch it i can recieve sms texts and the phone will at least ring when someone calls.

The second i touch the phone i lose service though and its realy hard to send a text. I have to keep sending it until it finally takes. It would be much easier if the iphone would just put it in queue like the BB did and then send it when it gets service.

Is there a way to send texts over wifi? Ive seen those stupid apps that let you send texts for free over wifi but its not actually your number, its more like messaging someone from your screen name. I need something that can send actual texts over wifi.

If thats not available then does anyone know how to make your texts go in queue?

If you are messaging other iPhones use iMessage (enable it in settings). If not, create a Google Voice account and get the app.

Sneaky necro, but I caught it! Back in 2009 there was probably no easy way to do this, unlike now.

I was going to post this same question but I found this thread.

I am curious how to do this. I want to be able to reply to SMS texts over wifi/data so that I don't get charged if over wifi, or get charged for data usage instead of charged for sending a text.

I thought Google Hangouts would do this, but I got charged for sending the text.

Yes, I have confirmed that this is working. I know for sure because my SIM card is data only (don't have a working number) so I couldn't send a regular SMS text if I wanted to.

On the Hangouts dialer screen, switch to messaging tab (left most), and choose the contact you wanted to send text to (or type the number manually), you will then be asked if you wanted to send the text from your GV number or your SIM card number. Just choose to send from your GV number and off it goes.

Is this from an Android phone? I'm not 100% sure but it may not work with an iPhone.

I think the basic answer is this:

PURE SMS/MMS requires a cell signal. It's cellular based and goes through your provider. WiFi won't cover this.

Now we have somewhat integrated solutions out there that rely on a 3rd party (Google Voice/iMessage) where you can somewhat work around that. In the case of GVoice, you have Google who is acting as a provider essentially and able to send out SMS because it either has some carrier status or has some tie in on their network side with a carrier. iMessage on the other hand upgrades all your SMS/MMS to a mobile chat protocol run by Apple. You're now bypassing your carrier in using iMessage. It's no different than using AIM/Skype/WhatsApp/GroupMe/Line.

Bottom line is if you're in a bunker with no cell signal, but you have WiFi, your phone cannot send SMS and MMS in its pure form. Google Voice can do it but that's because the SMS itself is being sent from Google and not really your phone anymore.

Thanks for the info. I messed around with it a bit but mine was a little different. I didn't get any option to choose to send from my GV number vs. my SIM number. I had to go to Settings -> SMS -> Send SMS from and change from Carrier number to GV number.

It showed up as a text from my GV number. I guess there is no way to change the number so that it shows up as a text from my SIM number.
