Any way to save an old laptop LCD?

Hi -

I have this old laptop that I got a while ago, it works great for what I need it for (mostly word processing) except for one thing... the LCD is brighter around the edges than the middle (a common thing for those oldies) but it also has a noticeable "band" about an inch from the edge of the LCD, kinda like it has been "burned" into the panel. Even when it is off, this band is noticeable. Is there anything I can do to at least improve this LCD somewhat? I don't want to spend money on this, so replacing the panel is out of the question.

Thanks!
