any way to save a DVD drive with messed up firmware??

Hello,

I have a Samsung DVD-ROM drive (model SD-612, according to WinXP's Device Manager). I (stupidly) attempted to upgrade its firmware to a region free version (RPC1) that obviously is not supported by Samsung. After upgrading the firmware using Samsung's firmware upgrade utility, the computer rebooted as normal. When I turned it on, though, the BIOS could no longer see the drive, and it doesn't open or do anything when I hit the eject button. Of course Windows can't see it either. Is there any way of flashing the firmware again to something that works at this point, or am I just stuck with a nice paperweight now? Looks like I'll have to be a little more careful in the future :Q

is it possible to flash it in dos? perhaps booting with a win 98 boot disk and then trying to flash it there if it sees it as anything....

i would try reflashing it in dos.........if it dont take there then i am afraid it cant be saved

Hmm, I don't know if that'll work either, mostly because not even the BIOS can see it. I'll give it a shot though and see if it works. If not, I guess it's time for a new DVD drive, huh.

Yeah, the light blinks for a bit when the computer is first turned on. I probably won't have a chance to try updating the firmware from DOS tonight since I don't have any floppy disks around here. But I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work anyway unless the BIOS can see the drive. Oh well.

if you're in a rush then you can download a basic boot floppy from bootdisk.com!

I did EXACTLY the same thing to my Samsung SD612 DVD-ROM, and now it is screwed. BIOS won't detect it and I can't flash under DOS. The Samsung drive (IMO) was a POS anyway, too bad I paid $100.00 for it in Dec 2000. I won't have another DVD-ROM in my computer, as it isn't that big a deal. I will however have a new 52x Lite-On CD-ROM, as the newer ones have Smart-X in them, and if it is anything like the 24x CDRW I just bought, DAE is awesome and the read speed it quite fast.

I found it ironic that I went looking for a solution after flashing my Samsung, then found your post with exactly the same problem. Guess I will avoid Samsung drives in the future. Here's to screwing the pooch on a DVD-ROM, and I should have known better flashing a CD device without an ABSOLUTE need to do so.
