Any way to raise volume/change email notification on 3G

For such a hyped phone, it seems very simplistic in some ways. I can't seem to change the email notification, and I am guessing it's impossible?

I just set it up with my Exchange info, and I really like it over my tmobile dash, but I can't hear the notifications, and it is kind of annoying that I have to "slide to unlock" before I can see how many emails I have.

Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to jailbreak the phone to fix this, as it is a work phone, and I'd like to keep the phone as stock as possible.
