Any way to force my C: drive to power down?

I want to power down all of my hard drives to track down a noise I'm hearing. If I set the power save feature in the control panel to power down hard drives after 3 min, my 2 other drives goto sleep but the C: drive doesn't seem to.

Is there a way to force them all to sleep so I can 'wake' them one at a time to see which, if any, is making the noise I'm hearing?

Thanks,
BGC

how would C: shutdown if you're on the computer? or do you mean you leave the computer alone? if the drive isn't going to sleep, that means that something is accessing the drive. you need to shutdown as many possible programs as you can and find the program that is accessing your drive.

If you can get the other two to power down, you shouldn't need to get C to power down too. If C is generating the noise you're hearing, then you'll hear it as it's the only one running. Otherwise fire up the other two in order to see which of those is the culprit.

Just take your index finger and stick it into each fan one at a time to stop the blades. When the noise goes away, you have found the culprit.

Yea, that's true. I was going to wake one at a time but I suppose it isn't necessary.

The noise is most likely one of the fans but I think I'll pass on sticking my fingers in them. LOL

The way I track down the noise is I have an old stethescope that came with a blood pressure kit. The end is removed so that it is just a rubber tube connected to the ear piece part. Just hold the open end of the tube close to what you want to check and you can pretty well tell what noise it is making. To check fans you need to place it near the center of the hub or the wind noise will drown out anything else.
