Any way to FORCE a P4-M CPU into slow mode?

Is there any way I can FORCE my Pentium 4-M 1.4GHz into slow (1.2GHz) mode? I want to be able to do this when it is on AC and CPU usage is high. I'm trying to temporarily decrease heat output.

Try getting a crappy hsf ;) Or you can take it off all together, but that would probably lead to freeze mode instead of slow. So get a crappy hsf. Or just take the fan off. That would give you a quiet computer and probably knock it down to a slower speed.

There are options in the BIOS which SHOULD affect CPU speed but they don't seem to really do anything.

I know its a laptop chip. But it still has the thermal protection. So overheat the chip and your speed will go down ;)

When I installed the speedstep software on a win xp laptop, it was just a registry setting that gave the full speed, and the battery speed..if I edited either, it would go to that speed..try looking in the registry for speedstep

I'd rather not damage the chip and melt my laptop. The chip already runs at up to 65 degrees!

Where might I find this speedstep software? I tried searching the registry but I could not find anything.
