Any way to do this in XP?

I'm taking my computer to a LAN [arty in a week. Last time this happened, some people started snooping around my hard drive and found some private stuff. I'd like to either encrypt files of my choosing so you need a password to access them, or restrict a user to their desktop, and not allow them access to anything there isnt a shortcut for on said desktop.

And I cant just shut off my computer and set a BIOS password or whatever, becasue its a small party, nad mine is one for just 4 computers that wil be there, between 8 or so people.

if you have NTFS, you can set encryption
right click the folder you want
go to properties, hit the advanced button, and then hit the "Encrypt Contents to secure data"

Now, I believe that any one who is not logged in as YOU, will not be able to see the contents, so you might have to make new profiles for everyone who will use your computer, and make them log in as not you, or you could just make a LAN PARTY profile.

Can someone confirm this?

What version of XP are you using? I don't know if home supports encryption....

and if you're using Pro, check that you're using NTFS on the partition you have that on (if youre running multi partitioned drives.)

just enable the guest account for them and turn of read only access for everyone except admins and power users, that way you can see your stuff and you dont have to encrypt your file system.

XP has an option to set up a "Guest" user. This might be a good solution if several other people will be using your machine.

you could make the files hidden and set it so hidden files are not shown. I doubt anyone would really suspect that you have hidden files that they'd find interesting.

Encryption doesnt work with XP home edition..

File permissions should still work.. you should be able to set "No Access" as far as I know..

<< iIve got home edition

and Ameesh, how do i turn of read-only access?
>>

right click on the folder or drive and goto properties, then goto the security tab, then only allow your personal account and administarotrs full access, then make your guest account deny access, violioa your done. make sure you dont protect the dirve where your games are installed,

Setup the accounts in SAM for your friends to access network resources. Take away all of their rights and put them in the "user" group.
This gives them access to the workgroup, and any shares you have.
Then go into the permission of the files you want protected, and only allow administrators or your account to access the folder.

If they physically sit at your computer, there isn't much you can do except lock your machine.

duct tape a sawed off shotgun to the underside of your table. Someone tries to use the mouse, and *Bang* *b00m* two to the chest.
