Any way to dabble in recording without buying a keyboard?

I have a keyboard but it's really crappy (plastic keys, no volume sensitivity for the keys).

I remember back in the day, I used this midi program where all I had to do was notate (is that the word? annotate?) the music on the 5 lines, pick a voice, and I had a track. You could layer multiple instruments on top of each other and everything. Everything was digital.

Is there anything like that now, but sounding more realistic than a midi? Or do I have to buy a keyboard + recording software? (EXPENSIVE!!!)

Just get fruityloops or some other low end audio production program (not up to date on them these days.)

windows or mac? there are some very good midi programs out there (not really midi, much higher quality, but they still call it midi) logic pro is one of the best for recording and midi work. this is what the pro's use. there are some good programs for windows also.

OK, I'm really confused now. I was doing some research. What is the difference between a synthesizer and a keyboard? If I just wanted to make some simple electronic music (kind of like Amethystium, if you've heard him) for fun, what kind of synthesizer should I be looking for? I don't need the latest and greatest..

Most recording programs have a piano roll function where you can click the notes in with your mouse. For PC, I know for certain that Cubase and Sonar do.

For easier ways to make electronic music, I'd go with Fruity Loops or Reason.
