any way to cap router bandwidth?

ever since my roomate got his comp hooked to the internet via a router in my room he's been downloading stuff literally 24/7 and not only am i slightly concerned that it'll go over the 10gb limit i have but also cause its just causing a general slowdown with my stuff because i dont leave kazaa open all day getting videos etc... last night i couldnt even play diablo2 online without constant lagging and just the day before it was normal...

ive tried talkin to him about it but he just doesnt listen... so i was wondering, is there any way to cap the bandwidth goin to his comp? or increase the priority of mine or something through the routers settings? its a netgear one... i dont want to come off as a dick but its MY internet connection that ive had for the past few weeks and i dont wanna remove his usage altogether, cause hes a nice guy... so just a behind the scenes fix if possible 😉

thx!!!

Buy some REALlY crappy CAT5 cabling and use that to hook his comp up to the router. Should slow him down QUITE a bit. Or try and get the old skool CAT cabling!

1. Walk up to router.
2. Unplug eth cable to friends computer.
3. Plug back in when he offers to pay half the bill.

Seems simple enough.

i dont wanna do that, i just wanna find a discreet way of capping him, changing the cables would be a good call but his are duct taped to the walls and he'd notice...

what was the first reply ?

By a few thousand Pound/Dollar Router/Switch that has a managable interface then it is easy

Yeah, I think that only the more expensive routers can do bandwidth allocation. If you had a PC set up to act as a router, maybe that could do it. I'm sure there's plenty of bandwidth allocation settings in Linux or Win2k.
Or maybe look for a Cisco router on the FS forums, one pops up sometimes for only, say, $250 or more. I don't know of they can do bandwidth management though.
If he's downloading 24/7, I think he could go over the 10GB (a month?) limit easily. What kind of line is this? Cable, T1, DSL?

If it's only for Internet, I've seen used managed 16 port 10 Base-T switches at PC consignment stores going for $25CDN.

If you have a small Pentium ling around you can get clarkconnect. It has bandwidth limiters built right in and is extreamly easy to use,.

Alright here's the deal. Get you a $5 hub and put it between the switch and his line. Cheap, easy, and effective. Cuts him down to hald duplex.

BooYah!

you have a 10gb limit?!! sheesh, why do they have limits? i do like 1gb easy everyday, good thing im not capped 😛

1) It's a router! Setup a 3rd computer and have it packet flood him, it won't affect your performance.
2) Can you get on to his system sometime? Edit his MS QoS policy to be like 75 or 85 % instead of it's default 20% (er whatever).
3) If you can't replace his cable because of the tape just get a Cat5 passthrough connector and connect a sh!tty 3' (or whatever....short) cable on the end before the router.

Edit: BTW you may get some better answers if you actually tell us what Brand/Model of router you have.

Umm, doesn't this option come standard on linksys routers? I've been limited at many a LAN party by my bastard friends....wait, no...i'm the bastard for using edonkey with no remorse...either way, check out linksys?

Um...how many times has YOUR internet connection downloaded at 10Mb/sec?

I'm happy if I hit 500k. (approx 1/2 of 1 Mb)

I don't think the hub would slow down his internet one bit.

You can set their TCP/IP stack so they receive at a sluggish (200 Kbps) rate.

IF they are also using TCP/IP to access local computers, it will make their explorer slow too so WATCH IT!

thx for the replies! 🙂

ok so the router is a Netgear RP614. I also don't have a budget to buy another one or any other expensive hardware. AH btw its Sympatico High Speed (xDSL) and i have a 10gb limit that i already went over last month and am not too keen to pay another fine for...

The NetLimiter suggestion is pretty good and I'm considering it because he's one of those people that have a zillion things pop up on startup and don't know what half of them are and also like use kazaa to play music etc, you get the picture. So i could easily install it on his comp and he wouldnt even notice its there but theres a small chance his dad could find it and potentially blame me (his dad is a comp techie guy but rarely comes over to start with).

I'm also quite interested in the QoS thing that someone mentioned... how would I increase that?

I think you're going about this the wrong way. I'm sure he's a nice guy and everything, but sometimes you have to lay down the law. Explain to him that his excessive net usage is costing you money and interfering with the online games that you play. It's YOUR internet connection. If he's going to abuse it, make him get his own.

I know that you can cap the upload bandwidth in Kazaa. That would allow you to game a little better. I don't think you can cap download speeds. But either way, that's not the best solution for this problem.

well hes only living here for the summer so i figure that that IS in fact the best way... so how do i cap kazaa download speeds?
cuz thats all he ever does, go on kazaa...

go filter out out his mac address and change your password. any idiot that won't listen to me at least isn't a nice guy in my book. 😀
