So, I helped a co-worker build a computer yesterday. It went going smooth as silk until the last step: the installation of the "Card Reader" part of a Mitsumi FA404M floppy/card reader (seen here).
I followed the instructions by first installing the drivers, then plugging the USB2.0 cable into the motherboard header. But I may have made the mistake of installing the wrong software drivers (for the FA404A model). After these were unsuccessful, I uninstalled them, then installed the correct drivers. (Both sets of drivers seen here.) I still couldn't get it to work, so I adjusted the position of the USB2.0 cable in the header. The cable is simply 4 pins. The header is 9 pins (one row of 4 and one row of 5.) I must have adjusted the cable in the header at least a half-dozen times to no avail.
Unfortunately, after doing all this, I discovered that not only did the reader not work, but additional USB devices did not work either (USB stick, mouse, etc.). Now it seems that everytime I insert a USB device into a USB port, I get the "Unknown USB Device" error during detection.
So where do I go from here?
1) Disconnect all internal USB cables from their motherboard headers, delete ALL USB Root Hubs and Controllers from the Device Manager, and reboot in hopes that Windows reinstalls all USB drivers correctly?
2) Do a complete format & reinstall?
3) RMA the board because maybe I fried the ports and/or controller?
I seriously doubt #3 as Windows can still detect USB devices for the ports but has problems installing the drivers for them. I don't think the ports/controller are fried.
I will try #1 soon and hope I get more suggestions from people here!
Note: I installed such a drive on an old ASUS P4B266 without a hitch!
