I've read reviews of video editing software and Ulead Video Studio usually ends up at or near the top of the list for "consumer grade" editing. I'm planning on using it to create basic home movies from analog hi-8mm captured through a ati radeon 64 ddr vivo. I'd also like to scan old pictures and make slideshows with background music (like people do for their 50th anniversary).

Any feedback on this product, good or bad, is appreciated.

You can download a free trial of it supposedly at Free VideoStudio Trial

I like the interface on the Pinnaclesys Studio DV 7 myself, but it doesn't support DVD burning at all, and supposedly doesn't support 4+ gig files on an NTFS partition, which means you can't edit more than 20 minutes of DV at a time.

MGI VideoWave 5 handles the larger files, but it doesn't support DVD+RW or DVD+R drives (from what I have seen), and it's interface is even klunkier than the packages.

Let us know what you think about VideoStudio if you try it !

I've tried the trial version and couldn't get a good feel for the app because of the 2 minute limit on the project. The interface is unusual, more like a giant console with strange icons as opposed to a menued application with words. I think a thorough read of the manual will help.

I'll agree with the comment about the oddball interface. Let me know if you ever find video editing software that uses standard windows menus. Apparantly 'artsy' people can't handle a drop-down menu...

I've used VideoStudio 3.0 and 4.0 as well as its bigger brother MediaStudio 6.0 to edit captured video, add music and titles, and include scanned pictures. VideoStudio 4.0 was easy to use, although it has a non-standard interface. It was very inexpensive. I combined the rendered media files (MPEG-1) using VCDEasy (available from VCDHelp.com) to a video CD ? a VCD ? which will play in most DVD players. What I have noticed in reading the postings about these products is that sometimes there are glitches or incompatibilities with certain versions of the software and/or hardware. Most ? if not all ? of the problems can be resolved with patience.

Best wishes,
