Any UK based tech companies not in London?

Lonyo

Lifer
I want to do work experience at some kind of tech company, but all of the one's I've looked at seem to be based around London. (Imagination technologies, various international offices of companies such as ATi).

Anyone know of a company with offices elsewhere (preferably Manchester area or the South West)?

I wouldn't mind something to do with computers/technology/whatever. Dell offices, nVidia marketing, software place, I'm not too bothered, but I'm probably going to do some kind of CS degree, so I want something vaguely related, if it's possible.

Cheers for anything anyone knows about.

Dell UK are based in Bracknell. So are Novell.

Oracle and Microsoft are in Reading, so are JDE. I work for BMC, based in Egham.

basically, the M3-M4 corridor is where all the big tech companies are.

Off the top of my head here, but I'm pretty sure there are a cluster around Cambridge, with some pretty big names having labs etc there. So I'd be surprised if there weren't a few around oxford too.

Apart from that, I don't really know. Whatever happened to Silicon Glen? Is there still as strip of tech companies up there in Scotland? I'm pretty sure Micron used to have an operation up there.

I really can't think of anyone around Manchester, but then I don't work in the industry. Actually, aren't Aria and Scan from Manchester? Not exactly what you were looking for, but certainly computer related 😉

The best bet would be to find some kind of trade publication - check out your local library.

Yeah, the M3/M4 corridoor are packed full of tech companies!

Bracknell has Dell, Novell (as already mentioned), Fujitsu, Siemens, Macromedia, Canon, and many more. I used to pass most of these on my 5 minute drive to/from work in the town centre when I lived there last year.

Reading is chock full as well!

I know IBM & Sun both have offices in South Manchester.

A couple of guys I went to school with did their work experience at the IBM office there, so I know that they do take on work experience people (or at least they did 7 years ago!)
