Any tweaks to decrease processor load when playing video?

Just installed it, tried to play some 720p clips of the Fifth Element and my processor usage is at 85-90% while the video is playing. I'm using mplayerc, running under Win2K. I have a 2.4GHz P4 with 768MB of RAM. Not much else open. Using the 71.84 drivers.

Anything I can do?

nope

for those clips its recomended you have a 3ghz computer or faster, its the way of the future 😛

Turn on fastwrites and wait for MS patch to enable hardware decoding for WMP10. 720p is a little less intensive, but you're right on the edge of the "minimal" configuration for software decoding.

(Minimal Configuration
(Play 720p video)
Microsoft Windows XP
Windows Media Player 9 Series
2.4 GHz processor or equivalent
384 MB of RAM
64 MB video card
1024 × 768 screen resolution
16-bit sound card

If you don't have an OEM system that makes it nigh impossible to do, then overclocking that 2.4ghz is your best bet if the playback isn't flawless, but your CPU usage is going to stay very high until that patch gets released as stated.

I have a problem running those videoclips. While they look stunning, sometimes it is very "slow", and the audio and video isn't in sync. I can fast foward to a certain point, then the audio/video would be in sync again, but after a minute or two, it slowly does it again.

I'm on a 2.2ghz Barton, 1gb of memory, and a 6800Ultra w/ the latest 71.84 WHQL drivers. I am using WMP10. CPU load is always less than 75%.

Could it be a codec problem?

the overlay mixer will make things faster but inhibits printscreen. if you never printscreen to capture video playback, which is probably 99% of you, then use the overlay mixer instead of the video mixing renderer.

enabling hyperthreading's not going to help. it can actually hurt. the pentium4 allocates half of itself to one thread and one to the other. if it does that however, other programs will run on the other thread and slow windows media player down. what it will do is make other programs faster while High Def is playing, if task manager has the "affinities" set separately for each program.

under windows media player options, performance tab, advanced button, select keep "drop frames to keep AV in sync", if it isn't checked already. windows media player options go for every player using the windows media control which is quite a bit. i have no clue why your cpu is at less than 75%, very odd. there must be a bandwidth problem somewhere. memory? what codec is causing this problem? it's probably not a problem with the codec if it only happens on your machine though. also make sure windows media isn't delegating decoding to the purevideo chip on your card (to help diagnose). if it is, it could be a driver issue. i've had this exact same problem with Media Player Classic but i haven't tried toggling the 'use WM ASF seeker option'.

Update: i think the video the OP posted is screwed up or something. i seem to have the same problem no matter what player i use. the windows media HD videos in the microsoft HD showcase have no problem.

mplayer classic is very slow for me, even with the same mixer but i havent bothered to find out why. try windows media player and see if it's any better.

Cool, lots of good advice!

I have "drop frames to keep av in sync" already checked off. My memory is Pc3200 running at 200mhz FSB @ 2-2-2-5 timings. How do I make sure its not using the purevideo chip? Isn't it supposed to help anyway?

Anyway, I see your edit, do you get the same problems I do?

EDIT: Thanks for helping!

yeah that video is f'd over, if that's what you're referring to. the guy's voice goes down to half frequency and sounds like an alien. then the video stutters all over the place. i don't have this problem with any other wmv hd i view. does the problem happen with every WMV HD that you view?

yeah, purevideo is SUPPOSED<- to help, but there might be a problem with the drivers causing the chip to return corrupted video/audio data. that's the only possible explanation i can come up with. however since microsoft hasn't even released the patch for wmp10 that's not possible at the moment. i think more than a patch is needed for this, nvidia doesn't even have their wmp10 directshow filter out (maybe nvidia delegates that part to microsoft). that's still a possible problem for MPEG2 videos though. if nothing else it's probably some weird, malfunctioning codec that got injected into your system.

by the way, i use memory with the exact same specifications. also i have the 6800nu and using 71.84 drivers. looks pretty identical except for processor (i use athlon64). but the cpu's not an issue if it's not even being pushed to its max. my cpu hovers around 25% usage while playing that video and i get that same problem. but like i said that's the only video i've encountered a problem with.

as to how to disable purevideo, uhhh...the only option may be to install drivers earlier than 67.66 (i think that's the version), to make sure the feature is completely, temporarily rid from your system. anyway i SERIOUSLY doubt that's the problem since your card (in AGP) doesnt feature the wmv acceleration. since you list an athlon xp processor i assume you're using agp8x.

so anyway.... here's what you should do at this point:

try another video, and if it doesn't work, post back and i'll try and think some more about the problem...i'm confident that will fix it.

download any of these videos and see if you notice the effects you first described.

if anyone has a question about directshow/video playing i can answer it because i've programmed and messed around with directshow for at least 2 years.

What codecs do you recommend I install when I reformat my system? I've found that ffdshow doesn't play everything, such as some xvid and ogg media files. A friend gave me this "ace mega codec pack" and I've been able to play everything with that, but it comes with so much crap that I don't really know what it has, or what version.

You can be sure it doesn't use it by playing the video since WMV decoding isn't supported by the chip yet.

Cool, thanks alot for hte help! It must have been the original posters encoding which was screwed up. I downloaded one of the videos from that site (Taxi3), and it ran flawlessly, in-sync and everything.

Thanks again, I appreciate the help.
