Dude, just buck up and get a projection TV. You can get a whole lot more for only a few hundred.

Projection TV's only work good if you are sitting in front of it though, looks like crap from angles and the side.

Not true, mine actually has a pretty good side angle. Plus you could always get a DLP but that adds a lot in cost.

You should be able to easily find a 30-32" 16:9 tube around that price.

Maybe a little more, but if you buy a 4:3 HD set today you're going to feel pretty stupid in a couple years (if not sooner).

How the hell do they call it HDTV, when HDTV specification requirment is 16:9 widescreen? Do they just cut off the side in HD broadcasts? Or do they do the black bars?

getting a 4:3 HDTV is like getting a computer with windows 98 on it.

the standard for HDTV is 16:9 not 4:3, so 4:3 is such a waste if you are getting HD.

not the new generation ones. DLP and LCD you can see fine from the sides. Also, you don't need it to be very dark at all to watch DLP or LCD tv's.

I have really bright overhead lights on in this pic.

16:9 material is letterboxed.

47" Panasonic HD, I can't remember the model number but I did get a really good deal on it. Best Buy had a sale and then I had them match CC's 10% off deal then got free delivery.

Well if you can hold out another year or so, HDTVs will be a lot cheaper.

how much cheaper

Currently one can get a 30" HDTV LCD for $999. I imagine that in 2006, unless the FCC pushes the deadline back again, when all television is broadcast in HD, a 30" LCD will go for ~$600.

A 4:3 HDTV then will probably take an even bigger price dive..

Of course, this is only a guess, but I can wait.
