Any Toyota Tundra/'05 Tacoma owners out there?

Dad wants a new truck to replace his '03 Frontier XE 4x4 Long Bed Crew. He's fed up with Nissan (interior bits falling off, molding around the passenger side window keeps coming aloose--fixed 5 times, but still keeps coming off, molding around driver's side rear window coming aloose as well, not to mention the master brake cylinder FAILING within months of him buying the vehicle).

Anyway, after I got my Camry and after he got his Highlander, he's become a Toyota whore so that leaves us with the Tacoma and Tundra. It has to be double cab and it has to have a long bed on it. Short beds need not apply.

Tundra DC - 74.3"
Titan Crew - 67.1"
F-150 Crew - 66"

We were looking at researching both the Tacoma DC and Tundra DC online, but the Tundra ends up being CHEAPER THAN THE FRIGGIN' TACOMA after incentives!!!!!!!!!

So are there any Tundra owners in the house? Any comments about the vehicle?

I'm no Ford fan, but after seeing the Ford videos comparing trucks, I'd steer clear of the Tundra...very poor engineering.

At this point in time, the Tacoma would be twice the truck the Tundra is now, considering how old and outdated it is.

Not the DC. The DC was pretty much a re-engineered Tundra. It's not a totally new design by any means, but it's a much beefed up version of the Tundra platform. Think of it as Tundra 1.5 :p

As far as service and issues with them.......Have seen afew with bad o2 sensors, but that about it. Service campaign will be starting in july for free ball joint issue.
The new FULL size(read huge) Toyota truck will be out around Xmas, supposed to be available with diesel and dually option.
Tundra is a great truck though, we have a service tech that has the TRD dual exhaust on his sounds great.

AFAIK, the new Tundra is an '07 model and it won't even be unveiled until the Detroit Auto Show next January with sales starting in Spring/Summer '06

I leased a 2000 Tundra SR-5 Access Cab in Sept. '00. I had it for 2.5 years and then traded it in for an '03 Maxima (wife's car now). I really liked the Tundra but poor fuel economy and the small backseat is what motivated me to trade it. I wasn't upside down in it and was able to get a great deal on the Maxima.

I've driven the new Tundra Double Cab and really liked it. I'd highly recommend the Tundra. It is by far the nicest truck I've ever driven.

I've driven the new Ford F150, Nissan Titan and a GMC 1500.

Edit-Mine was Imperial Jade Mica with grey cloth interior. I had bucket seats, indash CD player, privacy glass, fog lights, auto trans and I had a Line-X spray-in bedliner. I really like that giant moonroof they put in the new double cab models. If I bought one it would certainly have that moonroof option. :D

Good luck!

BTW-My '00 had some brake vibration problems but Toyota was very good about doing everything to fix them including upgrading to larger rotors/calipers. I didn't pay for a single brake job in the 43k miles I put on that truck. The impressive brakes on that truck were one of the reasons I bought it. I had an O2 sensor replaced but that was pretty much it.

Edit-Check out Tundrasolutions

I own a Tundra, but it isn't a DC as they were not available when I bought mine. I guess there isn't anything I can offer you. Cioa!

Well, my dad fired off an email to his credit union and told them to run the numbers for him on both an '05 Tacoma DC and an '05 Tundra DC. They're supposed to get back to him by tomorrow. Funny thing is, all my dad has to do is tell them what options he wants, what he's willing to pay and they'll handle all the rest including taking in his old truck.

That's what he did with his Frontier he has now. He negotiated a price with his rep from the credit union for the Frontier all through email. They negotiated a price on his trade. They drove to my dad's job and dropped off his new Frontier and drove off in his old truck :p

My credit union will do the same thing. But I will never own a car new enough for them do that :p

I had an '01 V6 5 speed access cab. Drove it about 45K miles and sold it last summer. No problems with it at all - it was a great truck.

I'm not a huge fan of the looks of the Tundra. The new 05 Tacomas look friggin awesome though. And the new V6 is almost as powerful as the V8. Anyways, my brother's father-in-law has an 04 Tundra Access Cab with the V8. He said it's a little slow off the line, but rides extremely well. My 04 Tacoma leans a bit when turning, the Tundra didn't seem to have that problem.

Tacoma vs Tundra

The Tundra actually got a more powerful engine for '05

282 HP @ 5400 RPM & 325 lb-ft @ 3400 RPM
240 HP @ 4800 RPM & 315 lb-ft @ 3400 RPM ('04 Model)

That being said, the Tundra is a bit bigger on the inside (5" more rear legroom on the Tundra which is a big plus) than the Tacoma and the bed length on each is about the same.

Mileage for both:

Tacoma: 17/21
Tundra: 15/18

Not that bad of a difference considering the Tundra has a V8

Just for a personal comparison, I can sit quite comfortably in the rear of my 04 Tacoma. I'm 6'1" and 230lbs so I'm not small. I wouldn't want to do so for several hours, but for around town and short trips I'd be fine. So if that's the case, the Tundra should be great for people of my girth.

My gas mileage SUCKS! I haven't seen 19MPG let alone 21. I usually get around 260-280 miles out of a tank of gas (which I think is 18 gallons). And this is for a FRICKIN V6! If I had a V8 I'd understand, but geez...Granted, it's the last generation V6, but I don't think the new one is any better, just more power.
I hope you and your dad enjoy your new Tundra!

Well, the 3.4 used in your Tacoma was old as dirt. The new 4.0 has all the new-fangled goodie goods like VVTi and all that other technobabble BS along with the fact that it is a MUCH newer engine design. Just about every new engine these days is more powerful and more fuel efficient than the engine it replaces.

Heck even the '05 Tundra V8 is more efficient than the '04 V8.

Neither is a Hilux. The Hilux is a different truck entirely that isn't sold in the US market.

Hilux

aha, i had always assumed they were just sold there under another name...any reason why not?

Looks a lot like the last year model Tacoma Prerunner.

That's the only way GM can sell vehicles. Heavily discounted, otherwise nobody would buy them.

With my V6 tundra, I would regularly get 17-18 MPG, occasionally hit 20 on the highway if I took it easy.

I typically got 15-16mpg out of my Tundra. Fuel economy is not the Tundra's strong suit. Still, it's roughly on par with any other fullsize truck.
